Another complaint they have is that he didn't mobilize labour supporters for remain. Ashcroft's exit poll shows that 63% of labour supporters were for remain (only slightly less than the 70% of lib-dems; greens got better but they are small). That sounds like a pretty good mobilization to me.

But since you're missing something - politics isn't just democracy/voting. The reason people worry so much about immigration is because of the availability heuristic - so many people make an issue of it so it must therefore be a problem. After that, no wonder polls reflect the agenda set by those with access to the media.

What's also interesting about both examples is the amount of fakery involved. The best signal for Ms Cyrus is not a tedious cliche involving very few clothes, but one decent song. That's beyond her, so she tries an unconvincing surface signal, rather than a convincing (because difficult) deep one. For Carney, the deep signal is a willingness to take on the bankers. Since that will also never happen, a surface signal is used instead.
