I agree with your reasons for writing literary reivews and your points about why some people do reviews for the wrong reasons.
As a writer myself I prefer to spend more time on my own stuff and reading is an enjoyment not a job. Although I publish reviews on the internet I am less prolific than most of the other people I know who write reviews.
For myself it's more about learning to analyse the different aspects of a story and be a more critical thinker and then writer, rather than for any personal gain or glory.
Why We Write Literary Reviews
I don't review many books and short stories. Maybe a dozen during a busy year, less when I don't feel the need. And I tend to focus on works which really impress me, as with my reviews of the Dark Faith anthology edited by Maurice Broaddus and Jerry Gordon, or The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi...

Women who write science fiction
I would like to invite the discussion of women's contributions to science fiction and why it's seems so hard to find great female SF writers in print on a regular basis. For my own part I see that there might be some sexism still at play in the genre itself amongst both readers and publishers, however, what I see more is that there is less taste for socio-political science fiction these days than there is for the likes of hard, military and space opera SF. Could this be the reason that women struggle to make themselves known in this genre? This is just a question, a thought for discussion, not an assumption. So if you feel the assertion is wrong, let's discuss! Continue reading

Science Fiction for people who don't read Science Fiction because they are afraid of Science Fiction
We could argue about the exact meaning of science fiction. Is it only fiction that includes real science? or is it also fiction with fictional science? Is science fiction a parent genre or is it a sub-sect of fantasy? That's really up to you. If you are trying to get... Continue reading

Twelve steps of writing
Admit that writing is your passion and get writing Don't make unrealistic goals when you first start. Just write. Plot. It doesn't have to be uber detailed or set in stone, but it will help you keep your focus. Don't be afraid to change your plot when it's not working.... Continue reading

The Writer and The Reader
The title of this post should really be The Writer AS The Reader. However, it wouldn't conform to the theme I seem to be developing with this blog. So, this post is not about your readers/fans as a writer, but about reading as a writer. In the past year I've... Continue reading

Hi Dave, thanks for your comments. I do get what you are saying. Obviously lots of people like Dan Brown because they buy his books and go to the films based on his books. He's very successful. Art is relative to the eye of the beholder to misquote everybody :D So one man's poor literary choice is another's pinnacle of entertainment. It's all about who is making the judgement. My post on the other hand is less about how I might personally feel about being told by a souless bit of web script that I write like Dan Brown, and more how absurdly out of hand a small thing like this can take over not only the web, but even supposed bastions of "higher" journalism (something else which is extremely subjective). I find it kinda crazy that people are sending the guy/gal who created this thing hate e-mail because they didn't get the result they wanted and have discovered flaws in his analytical tools.
The Writer and the backlash
The lovely CC--not to be confused with the other lovely CC--sent me a link to the NY TIMES (link not posted in protest against their pay-for policy, blah, blah, blah, stick-it to the man!) regarding the recent flutter of "I Write Like"controversy. Obviously this is just a bit of fun, a harmless ...

The Writer and the greener grass
It's great when a post by someone else not only mirrors your own thoughts, but inspires you to write your own blog post. The clever Adam Christopher posted a great article the other day entitled Short story writing and the novel shaped head, in which he explains why he had... Continue reading

Review - Air by Geoff Ryman
It's a book. It's a science fiction book. It's pretty fucking good. You should read it. A fairly lame review, but you have to understand that two years ago I met this guy named Neil Williamson. He writes books too. He's Scottish. He writes pretty fucking good as well. You... Continue reading

Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror writing group in London
I have one. It's called The Cola Factory. It is our one year anniversary this month. At my old blog www.resurrection-cola.com had a page for it with all the details. Unfortunately I had to let the site go because I couldn't afford the maintenance this year. This was bad timing... Continue reading

Why I write science fiction
I was planning a post on women who write science fiction, but I haven't finished all the research. So, I thought instead I would write why I write science fiction. I'm not really sure it has anything to do with gender. My experience of scifi goes back to my parents.... Continue reading

The Writing Weekend May 2010
In 2008--the magical year I decided to have a writing career--I stumbled across the first ever Alt.Fiction writing weekend run by Alex Davis. The concentration was meant to be on Horror and starred Kim Lakin-Smith and Conrad Williams running workshops along with Alex. There was no theme as such, but... Continue reading

Thanks Liz! I knew that you would approve. What I forgot to mention in my post was that I watched and learned from you in your journey to become a published mystery author. Your experience with online genre groups was significant factor when I decided to make a commitment to writing that I would go about it the "right" way this time.

Hi Ed, thanks for visiting and telling me about your process. As you can see we are very different. I really enjoy the revising process of writing. Although I probably do more than others, I'm a little obsessive I think.
How can writers ever be bored with their own work?
As I inexplicably travel through space drinking cola a thought struck me, how many times have I heard writers talk about being bored with their own work, or living in fear of this phenomenon? Loads. Yep, a scientific number. Perhaps only slightly exaggerated, but I am sure I can find enough quot...
