Yes, nothing will make them feel dumb quite like Zeller's inevitable 8-6-1 line. That'll show 'em!
Not a bad first half for Charlotte Bobcats' Cody Zeller
Fun to see the NBA again. Several surprises. Among them: An Atlanta team is winning. Rough Monday night for Atlanta. Julio Jones, a great receiver, fast and physical, suffered a serious injury, the Falcons lost at home to the Jets and the Braves no longer are playing meaningful baseball....
It just plain doesn't matter. If they continue to suck on the court, nobody will care, no matter whether they're called Bobcats, Flight, Hornets, or the Tune Squad.
I was wrong, you were right: Go Charlotte Hornets!
Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, is now the owner of the Hornets. But he probably won't be for long. He'll keep the team but dump the name. He wants something that fits his town and region. This means the name will be available, and the Charlotte Bobcats could claim it. I'm on r...
Yeah, his 13 wins between '01 and '04 clearly prove he couldn't drive anymore after his father's death. The only problem with Jr. was the decline of DEI once Teresa had to take over.
Here comes Dale Earnhardt Jr. You best get out of the way.
Go Dale Jr. I wrote a few weeks ago that I thought Dale Earnhardt Jr. would win two Sprint Cup races this season. As you know, there are college students who were in pre-school when Dale Jr. last won a race. I don't expect him to reel off four or five victories. But he has the talen...
ss, you're a joke. Bickerstaff had the team on a consistent track of improvement despite the NBA's mandated salary limits on the team, which were lower than any other team's. And that coach that players didn't respect? It's funny, but he's been coaching in the NBA each season since Bickerstaff was dumped by Jordan and his cronies, never on the same staff as his father again.
And how could you POSSIBLY complain about J.B. Bickerstaff when Cory Higgins--one of the most worthless players in Bobcat history--only has a job because his godfather owns the team.
Throwback outfits, throwback music, but you can't throw back the game.
Bobcats had moments. Biyombo with four blocks. But Hansbrough hammered them. 22 points, 9 rebounds. Third quarter it seemed as if disco was on the sound system and Biyombo was in the air. Throwback night. Bobcats wore Cougars uniforms, and PA announcer referred to home team as the Cougars...
Ha...Sean May didn't have problems with injuries. He had problems with eating. It's not anybody's fault but his that his joints couldn't sustain his body weight.
A Tar Heel underrated? It's true.
This is an odd to say about a heavily publicized Tar Heel. But North Carolina's Kendall Marshall is one of the least appreciated players in the ACC. Has nothing to do with his rare scoring outburst against N.C. State. It has to do with what he does best -- pass. We love scoring. We'll...
QCK: We do owe Chicago a first-rounder, but it is top-14 protected this coming year, top-12 in '013, top-10 in '014, and top-8 in '015 before finally being unprotected in 2016.
5 pressing issues for the Bobcats
Due to the NBA lockout, the Charlotte Bobcats have been barred from contact with their players since late June. With a tentative deal in place to end that lockout, NBA teams will likely start training camp and free-agency Dec. 9. Here are five issues the Bobcats must address on the quick once th...
Instead of whining about the NFL Network, why don't you just go out to watch it like the rest of the world?
Great GB-DET analysis. I've got similar thoughts on tomorrow's NY-NO game: If New York can come out and stay smooth on offense and score more points than New Orleans does, they'll definitely win the game.
BP, you're an idiot. Moore had two perennial Pro Bowlers on his team in Gross and Kalil. He simply can't handle the pressure of playing games that matter (which his in Miami absolutely don't.)
Leftovers already -- NFL leftovers
On the NFL: Matt Moore's work in Miami reminds me of Jake Delhomme's work in Carolina. Delhomme never found his place when he played for New Orleans. Then Carolina hired him. When Rodney Peete went bad the Panthers gave Delhomme an opportunity to start and he made the team his. Moore...
I'm not sure what point you're making. The whole point of the Bryant story is that he DIDN'T ignore Brown, and Brown still failed, mostly because of his own lack of his ability in his talent.
Sandy, Morrison never got a chance after his injury. He was one of the top ten rookies his first season, and could easily have stuck in the league, even if only as a deep bench shooter a la Korver or Kapono.
A good read involving Kwame Brown
I wrote several times last season about how Kwame Brown had to rebuild his self-confidence with the Charlotte Bobcats, particularly at the offensive end. It helped him greatly that Boris Diaw was such a skilled and willing passer into the post. Diaw refused to ignore Brown when he was open. ...
Jason: Here's the latest on Biyombo's contract issues.
http://www.rufusonfire.com/2011/10/10/2481294/biyombo-needs-a-solution#comments
There's clearly a deal to be made
I haven't written much about the back-and-forth between the NBA and the players union for two reasons: 1. I'm not in New York, so I can't have a great understanding of all the nuances. 2. A lot of hypothetical talk about revenue splits and contract rules and layers of luxury tax probably makes m...
Tom Sorensen, just another member of the Charlotte media more interested in having "excitement" than wins.
Nothing wrong with the Panthers going deep on third-and-short
I don't care that the Panthers threw deep on third and short against New Orleans. Somebody told me Monday that you always throw on second and short and always run on third and short. You don't always do anything. We complained about the conservative play calling of John Fox. So...
It's not Pugh's fault. It's Rivera's, for not even TRYING to find a starting-caliber corner to augment Gamble. Munnerlyn is a nickel, and Stanford, Butler, and Thomas are dimes at best. When you have to bring in a SAFETY for your nickel package, that's a PROBLEM. Then again, perhaps Pugh wants to follow Godfrey's track record of allowing TDs and blowing coverages all the way to the bank.
And IWI: They won't get rid of Davis. He's part of the "core!" That's why they blew nine million on him before he even played a single snap this year.
Davis suffers leg injury, uncertain how serious
Linebacker Thomas Davis suffered a leg injury in the second half but it was unclear how serious it might be. Davis, who missed the past 1 1/2 seasons due to two ACL injuries, returned to the game for one play before returning to the bench. Davis was walking on the sideline with no noticeable lim...
Yeah, William, you're RIGHT! We should be PROUD of our team's 0-2 start. At this rate, they're on pace to lose 16 really close games! It's so EXCITING!
Talent and poise prevail. Packers beat Panthers.
Talent and experience prevailed. Packers fell behind 13-0, but always retained their poise. Panthers imploded with interceptions, fumbles and mistakes in coverage. Carolina had some great individual plays. But Packers were cohesive and confident and just too good. They beat the Panthers 30-2...
1999, when we were second in the league? Where were you, Tom?
Damn
The passing Panthers. When have you ever said that? When have you thought it. Cam Newton is 7 of 9 for 93 yards. Panthers lead Green Bay 7-0, have the ball on the Green Bay 11.
OK, so delusional was obviously among the things Richardson was looking for in hiring a coach. Check. Explains why the first eight interviews landed him not so much as a sniff.
Rivera: Playing well not good enough
Ron Rivera had no problem with what linebacker Thomas Davis said Wednesday about being "tired of talking about Aaron Rodgers" and that the Panthers "should come away with a victory" Sunday against defending Super Bowl-champion Green Bay. Rivera said Davis was not disrespecting the Packers, just ...
Awful. There is NOTHING about Texas that says they should be a part of the ATLANTIC Coast Conference. The conference has been nothing but watered down since the last expansion. Why continue down that foolish road?
Texas to the ACC? Please make it so.
I love the Texas to the ACC rumor. I'd love it more if it were true. Texas would be an absolute coup for the conference. The ACC could tap into all those TV-watching Texas markets. And while the conference was adding fans, it could add drama. Rick Barnes, the N.C. native, would brin...
Well let's see, Tom. Did Baylor and that girl have a contractual business relationship? Did that girl choose to break off that deal to the detriment of not only Baylor, but their whole family (Big 12) and neighborhood (Texas?)
Bad news Baylor Bears
No wonder teams from Baylor lose. Baylor doesn't want Texas A&M to leave the Big 12. So it has threatened legal action and set up a website where put-upon fans can complain. So if Baylor were dating a woman, and the woman liked the SEC better, would Baylor sue for alienation of affection?...
PD, you're absolutely right. This team will be lucky to match last year's two wins.
Carolina Panthers bring Piggy back
The Panthers made a good, and obvious, move Monday, bringing back Geoff Hangartner. Hangartner, who played for the Panthers from 2005-08, was cut Saturday by Buffalo. I suspect he starts at right guard for Carolina Sunday against Arizona. Hangartner is a smart guy -- offensive linem...
Aren't pro wide receivers SUPPOSED to make difficult catches? Well, with Newton's horrid accuracy, I suppose we'll get the chance to find out.
Who made the best catch of the night? Armanti Edwards did.
Best catch of Carolina's practice Monday night was supplied by Armanti Edwards. Edwards broke open across the middle, and Cam Newton's pass appeared to be over his head. But Edwards reached high and plucked the ball out of the air. Tight end Jeremy Shockey probably caught more passes th...
Newton barely completed 40% of his passes! He can't do anything but chuck up a deep jump ball and cross his fingers.
Not bad at Bank of America Stadium Saturday. Not bad at all.
When old fails, we love new. John Fox didn't fail as coach of the Carolina Panthers, but his 2010 team did. So it was fun at Bank of America Stadium Saturday to see new. We saw a reverse, saw the empty backfield and saw the absence of a third-and-long draw play. We did not see one a...
A punt returner? THAT'S what we gave up the #33 pick in the draft for?
Armanti lives
Armanti Edwards grabbed a punt, ran right almost out of bounds, reversed field and took off. He returned Matt Dodge's punt 22 yards. It was an all-Carolina play: Edwards played for Appalachian State and Dodge played for East Carolina. The play was entertaining. We haven't had many of tho...
Yes, Richardson looks GREAT for punting an entire season on the fans' dime. Now we can re-sign the core of a 2-14 team! How could that not work out?
Rookie scale gives Panthers flexibility
ATLANTA – Jerry Richardson vowed the Panthers would be aggressive in free agency, whenever it starts. Sitting at $50 million under the proposed cap, the Panthers have the resources to make defensive end Charles Johnson a very rich man, while holding on to other core players (tailback DeAngelo Wi...
Pitiful, pitiful move by the owners, and this move has Jerry Richardson's grubby fingers all over it. The smug look on his face at the ratification announcement was enough to tell the story. After most of the progress in negotiations being made after Richardson was kicked out of the room, now he tries to pull a fast one in the 11th hour. Sad.
Time to end the posturing and public anger and play
Is there a way players don't ratify the agreement proposed by NFL owners? I don't see it. Yes, they're angry. They feel as if a document the size of a Russian novel was foisted upon them before they had the opportunity to read every word. But how many of us read 500-or-so page docum...
Yeah, VA, NOBODY has an urban ballpark...except Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Indianapolis, Memphis, Norfolk, Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Louisville, Chattanooga, Jacksonville, Toledo, AND Montgomery. It'll never work.
Minor league ballpark downtown is still a no brainer.
Charlotte can't support Major League Baseball. No Major League team is going to relocate to this city in this economy or in a thriving economy. We'd fill the stadium up weekends because the bleachers would be full of fans from the Greenvilles and Greensboro. But on Tuesday night? So let...
How many congressmen do you know that have lied under oath, Doc? Just checking.
steve, he's not being tried for using steroids. It was a violation of the rules and a stupid choice, but the problem here is that he lied about it under oath.
The count, Roger Clemens, appears to be 3-0
If anybody has followed the Roger Clemens 'roids episode, listened to the evidence and remembered and misremembered what you heard, there's only one conclusion, and it doesn't bode well for Roger. He goes to federal court Wednesday, Went to the Regal Manor Theater Monday afternoon. Like...
Only two of the last nine QBs drafted #1 have even managed to put up a win-loss record of over .500. Glad we're not trying to buck the trend or anything.
Newton: "I strive to be great"
During his visit to Charlotte three weeks ago, Cam Newton met with Panthers owner Jerry Richardson at his house. Richardson read Newton a letter he'd received from someone asking Richardson whether Newton wanted to be great. The Heisman Trophy winner and two-time national champion told Richardso...
