Most mothers have very little time for themselves. In between coping with attending to the needs of bringing up children, running a home and perhaps even holding down a job they often end up neglecting their own needs. The more stressed you become, the less effective you are at taking care of the various duties that you have. Stress leads to a break down in communication and a lack of patience, two vital factors necessary for good parenting. It is quite natural to want to attend to the needs of ones children on demand but in the long term this... Continue reading

Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life, but it is also a time of enormous change and with change there is always a certain amount of stress. Stress causes the overproduction of hormones adrenaline and cortisol, suppressing important biological functions in the body, putting the immune system under pressure. Anxiety suppresses immune system functions, but it has been proven that meditation strengthens the immune system with important hormones that help assist with the stressful effects of medical birth. Meditation is a safe proven antidote to anxiety and stress and has many psychological benefits not only for the... Continue reading

A few years ago I fell victim to crime. Living in one of the most violent countries in the world I suppose it should have come as no surprise. One of my ways of dealing with the trauma was to talk to other people about it, and I was horrified to discover how many people had had similar - many far worse experiences than me. How do you feel after having gone through this type of experience? Firstly there was a feeling of helplessness and crippling fear. I locked myself in my bedroom every night for a few months as... Crime is a worldwide problem which is on the increase. What is driving this crime explosion? And what steps can be taken to curb it? We live in a quick fix society, wide freedom of choice combined with little or no direction as to how to make one's choices responsibly is a formula for high crime rates. There are no simple answers. Crime is like a terminal disease. It is serious, potentially fatal, comes in many varieties, is difficult to diagnose, hard to treat, and almost impossible to eradicate. It is important for us to understand that trying to correct... Continue reading

It is not easy for children to grow up in modern society they are bombarded by so many things. In general two parents that are working full time. Peer pressure to behave and dress in a certain way, often due to a break down in family communication their peers become like family and this can have a huge impact on their futures as adults sometimes with lasting consequences. At the root of these problems is a lack of time and an increasing need for material things. This is compounded by massive leaps in technology, which have increased the break down... Continue reading

Stress like most things in life means different things to different people, for what may be stressful to one person may have little or no effect on others. It has been defined as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”. Stress is one of those words that has many negative associations, and the dictionary definition for stress is: “a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize.” It has been noted scientifically that increased stress results in increased productivity up to a... Every day meditation As I was cleaning my teeth this morning I noticed there was a spider in my bath struggling to get out. It had gone into the bath looking for supper as there were a few insects trapped there as well. Its hunger now satisfied, it along with the insects was struggling to climb out. I watched them for a while. It was a light bulb moment for me, like a miniscule scene from my own life. Off I go in the pursuit of happiness rushing off after this shiny ‘toy’ or that shiny person, only to discover... Continue reading

What is a problem? According to the dictionary definition it is a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome. Interesting to view a problem as something that needs to be dealt with and overcome. Like an enemy, something that needs to be defeated. Perhaps a problem is not a problem perhaps it is the way that we view a situation that makes it become a problem! If you had to ask many different people what they think a problem is you would get many different answers. Some would say not having... Continue reading
