This is a great post Craig. And it has produced some very thoughtful replies from some of the most respected names in the sector. What could I add - only add that there is a great opportunity for some real leadership. We can’t remain in this place so we need it. Given that we have a relatively large mass-market of low value donors, no increase in the overall market but only cannibalisation of other causes, and apparent abrogation of responsibility by Trustee Boards and Executive Teams where are Fundraisers to go? It's the perfect opportunity for them to stand up and tell us. Trustees, donors, task-forces, the Cabinet Office, fundraising boards and institutes, even chuggers and statisticians. We are all crying out for some collective leadership. I've seen some excellent pockets of this - some of which are listed in this blog - and I would also include the inaugural Future-of-Fundraising’ Debate held at the NCVO on June 30th. But the challenge remains. Who is going to pick this up and run with it creating some traction? To who’s clarion call will Fundraisers respond? In a sector where surely everyone enters it because they want to make a difference there is arguably the greatest opportunity to make a difference any of us will see in our fundraising lifetime. Whoever offers that leadership, I'm certain there are hundreds if not thousands of people ready to stand, full square behind them. I wish them good luck – we and they need it.
