A taste of life in Wisconsin - and beyond. A collection of photographs, nature, news & notes, and recipe favorites - some old, some new, all tried & true.
Interests: Gardening, hiking, photography, walking, baking, reading (usually non-fiction.) I also love TCM and old b&w movies. And - while not an interest, per se - my job at a national nonprofit social service organization "eats up" a lot of free time that I would rather devote to the above. I'm married (over 30 years!) with two adult children, a cat who loves to sleep, and a dog who keep us honest - meaning she forces us to get our daily walk in no matter if it's 20 below or raining cats & dogs... (no pun intended.) :-) You may also contact me at mjgehr at wi dot rr dot com.

The selection is always overwhelming at the Saturday morning farmer's market around Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin. This vendor had a variety of gorgeous looking produce on his tables. Conveniently, this post fits in nicely with City Daily Photo's September... Continue reading

We drove down to Chicago last weekend to see our son, Seth. He won a trip through his work (top regional sales!) and flew in from Phoenix for a 4-day visit. Saturday afternoon was the only free time he had... Continue reading

This savory side salad is a household favorite near the end of the gardening season, when all the required ingredients are plentiful. We grow the ruffled opal basil, but regular purple basil will work just fine. Both have a bright,... Continue reading

A series of sunflowers from our garden. We usually grow a row of tall multi-color sunflowers as a back-drop to our vegetable garden. While this summer's torrential rains and hot, humid weather seemed to stifle most of our tomatoes and... Continue reading

While visiting Salt Lake City back in May for the Rugby National Tournament, we also toured the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Temple Square. I thought it was interesting the way the fountain mimicked the temple spires in... Continue reading

The Mormon/Latter Day Saints (LDS) Conference Center, located to the north of Temple Square in Salt Lake City, was completed in April of 2000. The auditorium in the Conference Center seats 21,000. The building is constructed of granite from the... Continue reading

This is what waiting for summer in Wisconsin is all about. "Taste of Lake Country" is an annual beach party of sorts held at the Pewaukee Lakefront at the end of July. Booths include a variety of tastings from local... Continue reading

...I do believe it's true. - Paul Simon. Our company picnic was held at the Milwaukee County Zoo this summer. It had been a while since we were there, so I took a few pictures to share. The peacock (above... Continue reading

Thanks to my friend, Mary E., we've narrowed it down to (possibly) this one: lepiota acutesquamosa.

The barge "Gladiator" is pushing several cars of payload up the Mississipi River, just past Riverside Park in La Crosse, Wisconsin. While it isn't evident from this angle, the captain has to make a sharp left turn on the main... Continue reading

...Not oil, but algae. The stagnant, warm water of the La Crosse River flowage surrounding Myrick Park is a perfect breeding ground for several types of green algae. This decaying tree stump is submerged in about 4 feet of water... Continue reading

This dinner-plate sized toadstool mushroom sprouted out of a tree stump along Lindsay Road in Pewaukee after our recent rainy weather. It's creamy white with chocolate brown spots. Very pretty and almost delicious looking, except it's probably poisonous, so we'll... Continue reading

Located just outside the Pump House Regional Arts Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin, this blue metal sculpture provides some artistic interest to an otherwise mundane asphalt parking lot. The building visible in the background is Piggy's Restaurant. Continue reading
