"These days, I’m interested in what kind of striptease might be possible in our era. For my latest exhibition, I had cells taken from my body in a biopsy and cultivated them, then played with how they looked. So it’s a striptease with cells instead of clothes." http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/jan/07/orlan-best-photograph-birth-of-venus-striptease-with-trousseau

Jonathan Chait on how the language police are killing liberalism: The whole idea that the professor committed a crime by stealing a sign and shoving away its owner turns out to be an ideological construct. “The ease with which privileged white, and particularly young white gender and sexually normative appearing women, make claims to ‘victimhood’ and ‘violation of property,’ is not a neutral move,” [The Feminist Wire website] authors argued. It concluded, “We issue a radical call for accountability to questions of history, representation, and the racialized gendering of tropes of ‘culpability’ and ‘innocence’ when considering Dr. Miller-Young’s case.” http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/01/not-a-very-pc-thing-to-say.html

Ah, I see others have found this magnificence before I. No matter. Let's share.

O/T, but I rather enjoyed this: http://www.thenation.com/article/178140/feminisms-toxic-twitter-wars?page=0,0 "In January, the actress and activist Martha Plimpton tweeted about a benefit for Texas abortion funds called “A Night of a Thousand Vaginas,” sponsored by A Is For, a reproductive rights organization she’s involved with. Plimpton was surprised when some offended Internet feminists urged people to stay away, arguing that emphasizing “vaginas” hurts trans men who don’t want their reproductive organs coded as female. “Given the constant genital policing, you can’t expect trans folks to feel included by an event title focused on a policed, binary genital,” tweeted @DrJaneChi, an abortion and transgender health provider. (She mentioned “internal genitals” as an alternative.) When Plimpton insisted that she would continue to say “vagina,” her feed filled up with indignation. “So you’re really committed to doubling down on using a term that you’ve been told many times is exclusionary & harmful?” asked one self-described intersectional feminist blogger."

A moment of quiet appreciation for your post title, which I'm surprised I'm the first to applaud. [applause]

Somewhat O/T, but getting your kids to kiss their grandparents is dangerously blurring the lines of inappropriate sexual contact. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/08/shouldnt-force-child-kiss-grandparent-consent-sex-education

It's all so... I don't know how to properly put this into words, but it's so solipsistic. An assault is a terrible thing, even one as relatively harmless as this one, but her response is so "me, me, me". How do I "get closure" on this? How do I "process" this experience? Not by trying to have the guy apprehended - which would have actually, rather than symbolically, have helped other women; not by confronting him, which would have been ideal but which I can see might have been uncomfortable or impractical. Not even by just trying to forget it and move on, in the British way. No, instead her reaction is to turn herself into the ongoing centre of attention, achieving her own catharsis after an uncomfortable event by projecting discomfort onto others... it's just so fucking self-indulgently wanky. It's so... Guardian.

Maybe it's time to serve my own? Absolutely. You've earned it, as we all have after a certain time in our lives.

I haven't been to Vegas, but there's a carbon copy of this canal setup in the Venetian in Macau, complete with Chinese families being serenaded by Chinese gondoliers. Utterly bizarre.

Bit more meat on those bones: http://blogs.ft.com/brusselsblog/2011/05/11826/ Money quote: The [European] Parliament’s special committee on the financial, economic and social crisis, which after sitting for 18 months and sending delegations to countries hit by the said crisis, has issued recommendations to prevent it happening again. The answer: member states have to boost their contribution to the EU budget from 1.06 per cent of economic output currently to 5-10 per cent.

Aha, very kind. When I have something constructive to say - or destructive, or at least interesting - that goes beyond agreeing with you about the idiocy of mindless leftists. We will see.

In fairness to la Toynbee, I earn exponentially less than she does, I disrespect her profoundly, and I am pretty fat. And just yesterday morning I was reading an article about the bonuses paid out to executives at UBS Warburg in 2010 and before I knew it I was having a cheeseburger for lunch. With regular - regular - Coke. Yes, yes, I know, correlation and not necessary causation, but dammit, she might just be on to something here...
