What if a rogue state, like say North Korea decided to bestow North Korean citizenship on all the members of parliament in retaliation to us supporting sanctions on them. Would that make said member in violation of section 44, or could one argue in the High Court that a citizenship was given to them with their wanting of it. COMMENT: The majority judgment in Sykes v Cleary isn't particularly helpful on this. Some of the other justices raised a similar example as a reason for not being literal in interpretation.
