What a splendid, imaginative animal you've made! I think Google+ is probably wonderful, but I fear I just don't have more computer time available. nancy
I've Been Away
My world simultaneously expanded and contracted with the launch of Google+. Contracted in the sense that I'm spending about 95% of my online time there and expanded in the sense that I follow over 700 people there and have found a wealth of inspiration and interaction. I've been doing a lot of ...
Good for you! In interested to know what you've decided to do for the sketchbook project! nancy
What To Draw?
I found myself wondering that, just feeling like I wanted to practice but I had no clue what to use as a subject. And then I thought, "hey, isn't that the whole point of Everyday Matters?" So I went and pulled a prompt out of the much-disused container and sat down to draw. Here's what I ended...
I'm intrigued by your sketch and it's looseness and am tempted to try out the pen. I wonder how it would be for a lefty!
The Perfect Pen
Last time, I promised I would write about the amazing pen I discovered. I know everyone struggles to a certain extent to find the pen that really works with their style (aside from the lucky few who can pick up anything from a fountain pen to a ballpoint to a Sharpie and work magic), and I'm no...
It's lovely, and I love the paper! nancy
Plants Galore
My husband and I spent the last week in California. We were too busy for me to have time to sketch while we were out and about, but I did manage a couple of drawings at his parents' ranch. I'm filing this drawing under "Urban Sketching" even though it's pretty far from urban. The first one is wi...
Your carnival sketch is really good! And, I think you're being just a tad harsh on yourself about your watercolor. There's much to like about this piece. You did a fine job with the sky - I love the clouds. The buildings tell you everything you need to know about them. The looseness and simplicity of your design is just right. I like the lack of fussy details. I think you've earned a cookie! lol nancy
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
I was going to do this in reverse order, starting with the bad and the ugly. You know, the same way that when you have some good news and some bad news, most people want to start with the bad news. Finish strong. Instead, I'm going to start with the good and maybe you'll have lost interest by th...
There's certainly nothing blah about this at all! I love it! nancy
Dragon Boats
Last weekend was the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival here in Denver. Morgan and I have always meant to get out and see it, but hadn't gotten around to it until this year. It was a scorching day out there, but I guess that's better weather than they've had the last couple of years, when I understan...
I agree - you did a fine job with this. And, what a Hot Summer this has been everywhere - it's going to be in the 90s again here today in Michigan. ugh! lol nancy
Garden of the Gods
Early last week, Morgan and the kids and I went down near Colorado Springs to visit Garden of the Gods Park. We had a great time, in spite of it being very, very hot. Giant rocks tend to reflect sunlight and heat, which added to the problem. But we were all troopers and toughed it out (three lar...
What a wonderful sketch! Also, it looks like a great place to hang out! nancy
One From the Sketchbook
Last Sunday, we found ourselves in a coffee shop yet again. This time it was to wait for a friend of my daughter's that she was meeting. The place was a combination coffee shop/used bookstore, which I thought was pretty cool. While we were waiting, I sketched a woman working at one of the other ...
You certainly mastered the challenges with this - it's lovely! nancy
Jersey
First of all, I want to thank everyone who left lovely comments on my last post, with the watercolor painting. Your remarks are very encouraging, and I'm sure I will be trying my hand at watercolor again in the future. It's been hectic around here with the kids visiting for a week, and I've gott...
Very nicely done! You might want to consider doing a lot more watercolor paintings! nancy
Watercolor?
I was reading Vicki's blog the other day and she linked to an entry on another blog in which the author posted a still life photograph and challenged people to paint it. I have some watercolors, and some watercolor paper, but I never, ever actually do watercolors. I figured it would be a challen...
I think you did a great job with these. You did a great job with the perspective. nancy
I Do All My Drawing in Coffee Shops
Not really, but sometimes it feels like it. Lately, we've been suffering through a weather pattern that includes violent thunderstorms every afternoon and evening, sometimes stretching far into the night. So there haven't been many opportunities to get out and draw. Enough complaining, though - ...
They are lovely, and the pages behind them really make them special. nancy
Drawing in Books
I did these pages a while back, but never got around to posting them. The outlines are drawn with a Pitt pen and then they're colored with Prismacolor pencils. From Book Art I think they'd look great as a framed series. Maybe one day I'll get around to actually framing them...
Yes, there is definite improvement! Keep up the good work. nancy
Light Bulb Moment
Sometimes, I think I don't have anything for the blog, and then I remember that I have a lot of work scanned that I've never blogged. If I could get the discipline to blog 5 days a week, I'm pretty sure I have the material to sustain it for quite a while. Anyhow, today I was doing my gesture dra...
The armor is splendid, and you've made a great start with the street scene! nancy
Germany, Jersey, and G+
The next page of my Germany sketch journal is here: For a week of our time in Germany, Morgan and I were at a math conference in Irsee. Well, he was at a math conference. I hung out with the mathematicians at meals, snack times, and in the pubs. Anyhow, the conference was hosted at a converted...
Welcome back! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your terrific work. nancy
Back in the Saddle
I've been away from posting for a while. I have a big journal project that I've been working to catch up on for Swap-Bot. I got behind on working on it in the run-up to the wedding and have been trying to get a handle on it again ever since. It's nearing completion now and I'll start posting par...
I love this idea, and these are great! nancy
Mail Art ...
Recently I had a couple of swaps going that involved mail art. Two envelopes were done with markers, two with colored pencils. The colored pencil ones are going to have to wait for another day, because I haven't heard if one of them has arrived at its destination yet. In the meantime, I'll show...
I like this very much! Good luck - I hope it gets in. I've gone to some of those virtual places and wandered around for what seemed like forever and never found a darn thing. This was a great choice! nancy
First Virtual Paintout
Someone on the Everday Matters list linked to the Virtual Paintout project (I'm sorry that I can't for the life of me remember who it was). In a nutshell, every month a different location is given, and you use Google Street View to find a scene to draw or paint. This month's location was Romania...
Very nicely done! I love the Micron pens, too! nancy
Urban Sketching
Last Tuesday, Morgan and I went to the neighborhood Czech bar (Sobo 151)to watch the AC Milan-Tottenham Champion's League match. Several aspects of the bar caught my eye to draw (the wall of bottles was tempting), but I settled on the jerseys hanging from the ceiling above the TV. I didn't want ...
Artistamps! Yes, they're wonderful. And, I love your loose flower drawing. Well done! nancy
5 Minute No-Eraser Sketch
Yesterday while out having coffee, I decided to challenge myself to draw the flowers on the table quickly and without using an eraser. My preferred style is much tighter and more controlled, of course. I used to balance that by doing quick sketches while we were out and about, but I've fallen ...
This is a wonderful drawing! You did an excellent job on it, especially the details of all the different surfaces. nancy
King Pakal
I drew another Mayan image recently; this time it's a bust of King Pakal. Again done with colored pencils - I suppose I could have done the bust in graphite since it was just grayscale, but I opted for the gray colored pencil instead. I'm going to be doing something with both of these Mayan d...
I've learned so much from reading your herstories. What stunning paintings she did! Thanks yet again for doing the research and sharing it with all of us! nancy
Art Herstory Part XVI: Josefa de Ayala
The Nativity When I first looked at the paintings of Josefa de Ayala (aka Josefa de Óbidos) I immediately thought of Rogier Van Der Weyden - his paintings convey deep emotion, and it seems to me that Ayala has that same ability. Her paintings also have what I think of as 'flow' - the eye mov...
Wow! You did a wonderful job with a difficult subject to draw! nancy
Everyday Matters #28
When I read this prompt, I wasn't sure what I was going to draw. I didn't want to go with anything big and boxy (refrigerator or stove), and we don't have a whole lot of appliances, actually. Microwave - uninspiring. Toaster - impractical to move (we need to clean the crumb tray more often). Mix...
Oh, I'm sure she'll love it. It's really remarkable, and who can resist a baby giraffe? nancy
More Giraffes?!
For a swap on Swap-Bot, I'm supposed to send a decorated envelope. I looked at what my partner likes to get some ideas of how to decorate it, and see that her favorite animal is ... the giraffe. Did I have more giraffes in me? I figured I'd at least give it a shot. So here is the envelope I'm se...
