The physical structure of the ice, and the salinity of the surrounding sea water will have large effects, as well. The volume of the ice is probably the best measure; much better than area alone. Neil

At 30kW this genset should be able to extend the range of a car like the Leaf; powering it at highway speed and charge the battery in about 1 hour, correct? If that is right, then the gen set would turn off for about 2 hours or so. So, the 47MPG applies for the 1 hour while the engine is running, but then the Leaf (in this example) would go back to getting over 100MPGe for the next 2 hours. Or maybe I am not correct? Neil
It would be very interesting to see whether they could reduce the fuel consumption, possibly by reducing the displacement of the engine; rather than increasing the performance. A smaller engine would weigh less even, and so would also help efficiency even more. Neil
Hi Sherry, I was at the X-Prize, and the only EV (actually a serial hybrid) that I am aware of that has an easy coast mode is the FVT eVaro. Even the Aptera has some level of regen no matter what mode you are in -- and I think the MPGe numbers reflect this to a certain extent. I know that the eVaro only has regen on the brake pedal, and that they get *all* of their braking from regen down to ~5mph, when the friction brakes take over. It can stop 60-0mph in just 130 feet! It seems that all the EV's that use some level of regen in the accelerator pedal end up having shorter ranges than they should. The Mini-E, the iMiEV, and the Th!nk, the Aptera, etc. -- I do not know about the Leaf. Hmmm, I wonder why? Sincerely, Neil
I think the major point that has to also be made is, that electricity *can* be gotten from any number of sources. Whereas petroleum and most other carbon energy sources is finite. Out with the old carbon and in with the renewable energy/short-cycled carbon! Lets not get hung up on the word "fuel" -- I think that thinking of it as "energy" is better, anyway. It is energy efficiency we are after, and if it comes from renewable resources, then that should be an advantage. If the electricity comes from renewable sources, then it almost doesn't matter if it is "wasted", does it? I totally agree with the major tenets of this article, and I am glad that the X-Prize is doing things this way.
