Editor's note: For our last week at Style Lush, I've asked the writers to share both a favorite post by another writer, from over the last three years, and a favorite post of their own. You'll see these posts linked to at the top of their new post for the week. Enjoy a stroll down Lush memory lane! by Hillary I can't tell you how much I love this site and my Lush family. I still can't believe Jennie let me write for a style blog. Thank you for giving me this space to pretend I know what I'm talking... Continue reading

This is a very good plan, Jennie. I HATE trying on clothes in the store (but I also waste a lot of time / money / effort buying clothes online.) I may need to piggyback on your resolution.

By Hillary I hate spending money on individually-portioned snack food because I feel like I'm paying more for the wrapping than the food (and I end up feeling guilty about the pile of garbage I'm left with.) I especially hate spending money on snack food that is easy enough to... Continue reading

bBy Hillary Mother Mother caught my eye because of their local roots, but their sound kept my interest. One could make the argument that they're a hipster band and that's not entirely untrue or unfair, but they're more than just a couple chicks with bangs and three dudes wearing flannel and/or skinny ties. They rock, okay? They're interesting and fun and if liking Mother Mother makes me a hipster then so be it. Pass me a Pabst Blue Ribbon and let's go thrifting for slouchy knit hats (but please make sure "Bit by Bit" off their latest album The Sticks... Continue reading

by Hillary I called Hot Fuss by the Killers a timeless album but said they weren't one of my favourite bands. The album resonated with me when it was released and it's remained on heavy rotation on my iPod all these years later. I just never really got into the Killers as a band. And then I saw them perform live. The Killers put on one of the best shows I've ever seen (full disclosure: I also had the best seats I've ever had for a rock show thanks to my works-at-a-record-label friend.) Brandon Flowers had a massive smile on... Continue reading

by Hillary Figgie Shoes almost make me wish I was getting married again just so I could order up a pair of these gorgeous, custom hand-painted shoes. I think they'd look perfect peeking out from under a wedding dress and are an adorable wedding keepsake. {Photo credit:} Continue reading

by Hillary I started seeing something new this autumn, as the summer dresses and flip flops were replaced by skinny jeans tucked into boots. People were wearing their boots with legwarmers. Except that they're not called legwarmers anymore. They're boot cuffs. That, my friends, is a pair of legwarmers. Re-branded. What do you think? Are boot cuffs fresh and exciting or do they make us look like we're trying to revisit the 80s? {Photo credit: The Comfy Times on Etsy} Continue reading

by Hillary GoldieBlox is a toy company founded in 2012 by female engineer, Debbie Sterling, in an effort to entice girls into the world of engineering. I was skeptical at first, worried that it would just be a set of blocks painted pink and purple, but my fears were unfounded. Debbie's passion for engineering and for opening up a traditionally male occupation to females shines through in her YouTube video. If you've got kids in your life, I recommend taking the four minutes to watch it. Continue reading

by Hillary My son is in a really fussy, fidgety stage right now. It is impossible to keep him happy and still long enough to change a diaper or make a phone call. He's also at the stage where my iPhone is the most fascinating thing in his little world. I try to limit his access to screens but desperation has driven me to start using my iPhone as a toddler distraction device. A very expensive, very breakable, toddler distraction device. Fortunately, the Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case exists. Barf-inducing name aside, it's brilliant. You just throw on... Continue reading

by Hillary I proclaimed my love for the Toni Top here and I still maintain that it's the best nursing top on the market. Even cooler? It's now available as a tunic and a dress. I own the tunic and I love it. It's stylish, comfortable, and has all the awesome features of the Toni Top (easy access for nursing, no fussy snaps or buttons, etc.) Just like the original top, the material is stretchy enough that it can be comfortably worn throughout pregnancy and beyond. Snugabell wants to offer Style Lush readers a discount on their site, and... Continue reading

by Hillary Advent calendars featuring Christmas-themed activities instead of candy are nothing new around these parts (check out posts by Jen, Jennie, and Lawyerish for more inspiration.) The Creative Christmas Countdown 2012 by Creative with Kids is a little different (and a lot exciting!) Twenty-four bloggers have put together an advent calendar of Christmas-themed activities and art projects. All you have to do is subscribe to the countdown via email and you'll receive a daily email with a brief description of the day's activity. Supply lists will be emailed the last week of November so you can be prepared for... Continue reading

By Hillary Coconut oil is everywhere right now (probably due to the popularity of the Paleo diet.) I've heard that it's great for your skin but couldn't justify buying a jar (of oil! to rub into my face! something just feels off about that) until the emergency room doctor recommended it to prevent my husband's wound from becoming a giant forehead scar. I remain skeptical that my husband will escape unscathed but it was the push I needed to go out and spend $10 on a (tiny!) jar of coconut oil. I can't wait to try it out on my... Continue reading

by Hillary My birthday gift was not indulgent. My birthday gift was practical and boring and I love it. After a close call involving a toddler and an external hard drive (well, not really a "close call" so much as a "total loss of seven years of original music") (but to be fair to the toddler the hard drive was left within his reach and had tempting multi-coloured blinking lights) my husband went out and bought me a 2-bay network storage share centre with four terabytes of storage. Oh yeah, talk nerdy to me, baby. My type-A personality is beyond... Continue reading

By Hillary I am a huge fan of drugstore makeup (and by "drugstore" makeup I mean "cheap" makeup.) I end up hating most of the products I buy (due to my annoyingly sensitive eyes and skin) and it stings a lot less to have a drawer of unused drugstore makeup than a drawer full of discarded designer products. Elizabeth compared the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain (stupidest product name ever? I think so) to the Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Stain and her conclusion that the Revlon product is just as good as the more expensive product (but is a third... Continue reading

by Hillary I am usually a practical birthday gift kind of gal. Not, like, microwave practical, but I (usually) ask for camera equipment or clothing when my husband tells me to choose a birthday gift. (My husband is a lot of excellent things but an intuitive gift giver he is not. I usually have to be extremely specific with what I want for gifts. I'm not complaining, I just feel like I need to clarify our situation. I'm not a brat, I swear! This just works best for us.) I'm turning 30 next week and I feel like my 30th... Continue reading

By Hillary Father John Misty's Fear Fun is so strange and so quirky that I suspect it's kind of brilliant. His sound is kind of like a blend of Rufus Wainwright and City and Colour but his lyrics are truly unique. He claims the album is a result of a drug-fuelled trip down the west coast which is believable after listening closely to his words. The standout tracks for me are "I'm Writing a Novel" and the beautifully absurd "Tee Pees 1 - 12." {Photo credit:} Continue reading

by Hillary I heard the Sons of Granville busking on the streets of Vancouver and had to buy their album. These guys are amazing. Matthew Lennox (electric and acoustic 12-string guitar), Thomas Beckman (viola), and Jarrett Plett (drums and percussion) create music that is soulful and enthusiastic and just plain beautiful. Best of all, my kid absolutely loves their sound and I find that the lack of singing means that I don't get tired of hearing the album all day every day (seriously - my kid loves this cd so much). {Photo credit:} Continue reading

by Hillary You guys, I'm not a huge sewer but inspiration does hit from time to time. I've only ever purchased my sewing supplies from a fabric store so I didn't realize there was another world out there. A world of brighter colours and funkier prints. A world where bias tape doesn't have to be boring. I poked around merrigoround & me's Etsy shop and loved what I found. Polka dots! Gingham! Stripes! Oh my. I am definitely stocking up for my next (yet to be determined) project. {Photo credit: merrigoround & me} Continue reading

by Hillary I cannot wait until my kid is old enough to be wowed by magic. I love finding quick and easy "magic" tricks that I'll (one day) use to blow his mind. Like the Ivory Soap Cloud from Our Best Bites. Just unwrap a bar of Ivory (it absolutely has to be Ivory or you will have a disaster) and microwave it on high for a few minutes. The bar of soap magically grows into a delightful puffy cloud. Not bad for under a dollar and just a few minutes of your time, right? {Photo credit:} Continue reading

by Hillary Hot Fuss by the Killers was released in 2004 but it's still on heavy rotation on my iPod. I'm not a huge Killers fan. They're good, some of their stuff is great, but they haven't wowed me with anything they've released since Hot Fuss and I've never bothered to see them live. I don't still listen to Hot Fuss because the Killers are my favourite band is what I'm saying. Part of why I love Hot Fuss is nostalgia; I was living in England when I bought the album and certain songs take me back to cruising down... Continue reading

by Hillary Ed Sheeran's sound is similar to a peppier Damien Rice or a broodier Dan Mangan with glimpses of Jason Mraz. His debut album, +, has that singer-songwriter vibe with acoustic guitars and raspy sung witty lyrics. He veers off course, though, with a few R&B-inspired tracks to keep things fresh and interesting. My favourite tracks are "Wake Me Up," "Sunburn," and what may be the saddest song I've ever heard, "Small Bump." {Photo credit:} Continue reading

by Hillary I decided to try other N.Y.C. products after falling in love with their lengthening mascara and I'm so glad I did. N.Y.C. High Definition Liquid Eyeliner is the easiest, cheapest, longest lasting liquid eyeliner I've ever used. It's also the only liquid eyeliner I've ever used. You guys, I am bad at applying eyeliner. I cannot even tell you how bad. Liquid eyeliner is so far beyond my makeup applying capabilities that it's not even funny. This eyeliner is foolproof. The applicator is shaped like a pen so you literally draw the eyeliner on instead of trying to... Continue reading

By Hillary A kind of Mumford & Sons / Avett Brothers blend with a dash of the Head and the Heart, rife with hand claps and boot stomps, lyrically and instrumentally brilliant (rare to find, in my opinion) I cannot recommend The Lumineers by the Lumineers enough. Seriously. Buy this album. Play it loud. Sing along. Just try to stop yourself from smiling (can't be done!) {Photo credit:} Continue reading

By Hillary You've probably heard of Cheryl Strayed's memoir, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, because it is everywhere (it's the first book of Oprah's Book Club 2.0) and it is wonderful. This isn't about Wild (though if you haven't yet read it, I suggest you do.Strayed is an excellent writer and I truly enjoyed the story of her adventure.) This is about Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar. Strayed recently revealed herself to be the (no longer) anonymous Rumpus advice columnist, Sugar. Tiny Beautiful Things is a compilation of both... Continue reading
