We've also trekked and camped overnight at some unusual sites including the Ohio Turnpike rest areas. $20 a nite, as I recall with 30A and dump, etc.
We generally make reservations because of the boom in RVers. (that's a pun as the "baby boomers" are apparently flocking to RVs). We also use Allstays. Of course, in a Class B we do fit into spaces in supposedly "full" campgrounds that others can't. Very handy to trek in a B, believe me.
Our travel day is limited by hours. I prefer to trek less than 12 and 8 is ideal. We usually stay at a site for two days, which allows some decompression time and opportunities to investigate local stuff. However, if we're going for distance I may make an exception. (for example, 1,800 miles from point A to B in a few days).
We have yet to fail to find a space in a reasonable amount of time while planning the next night's stay. This is due to a combination of planning, and some luck. Our 210P is capable of boondocking, but without shore power we do have the propane furnace for cold weather, but no AC if hot, unless we run the generator.
