One of the common experiences that brings people into therapy is the feeling of being "stuck". This is an expression that people commonly use to describe the experience of being brought up again and again against some psychological issue that... Continue reading

A therapist sees them all the time: the intergenerational patterns that weave themselves into the lives of families. The heavy weights that get passed down from generation to generation, with people often being unaware that this process is even going... Continue reading
Thanks for your comments, Sabrina. I think many of us feel the strength of that connection to the place where we grew up. It's something that I think is with a lot of us for our whole lives. And often there's a whole range of emotions that go with it. I'm sure that you will never entirely lose the emotional connection with that original family home. You will change and invest yourself in a new home, but the connection will always be there, in some form. All the best!

I think that many Canadians' imagination and empathy has been caught by news stories of our Governor General, Michaelle Jean, who has been in the news here quite a bit this week. Her Excellency is herself a native of Haiti... Continue reading

In recent years, there have been certain strong and notable trends emerging in the field of psychotherapy. Some have been very valuable, but some, unfortunately, have not been for the better. In many cases what's on offer doesn't seem to... Continue reading

In this post, I would like to write about something that may have a sense of "taboo" about it. For many of us in the present day world, a powerful struggle goes on in our middle years. There are greater... Continue reading
Sounds like a great idea, Elona. I think being a teenager anywhere in February might potentially suck. Your idea of getting them thinking about what's important in their own lives is great. It could well get them thinking about what Jung calls their "hero journey", that is the process of claiming their own story and moving out into lives that they can feel are authentically theirs. Hope it goes splendidly!

In recent years, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on what are called "brief psychotherapies" by the therapeutic profession. The emphasis has been on providing very short courses of psychotherapy to individuals, with an eye to providing concrete... Continue reading
