Oh, San Francisco, I miss you already. I am currently on tour from Chicago to Phoenix and back to Northern California and I find myself looking forward to yet another San Francisco jaunt. This time I am promising myself not to miss... Shopping at Benefit. http://www.benefitcosmetics.com/ This cosmetics company is based in San Francisco and consistently puts out all of my favorite products. Most recently I was gifted with their Badgal Plum Eye Enhancing Mascara and Posie Tint Cheek and Lipstain. Both products have changed the way I look at makeup. Chef Jia's 925 Kearny Street On the edge of the Financial District and right next door the the behemoth, overhyped and overpriced House of Nanking, this teensy hole-in-the-wall chinese restaurant is delicious in a way that makes you crave it even after an 8 year hiatus. Considering I once made a special trip from Sacramento just to eat there, I can't believe its been that long! but it seems every time I visit San Francisco, I'm too tempted by the bazillion other options and I'm a try anything once kinda gal. Don't miss the honey-chili chicken, hot and sour soup and the green onion pancakes. At least one more place I've yet to explore. My friends had a gazillion suggestions... Tartine, Ike's Place, Knockout, Brenda's French Soul Food, Front Porch, Phonebooth, Philz Coffee, Burma Superstar, Supperclub, Rye Bar, The Bell Jar, Shotwell and Fiddler's Green. They all sound incredible! Like I said, everyone has their own version of San Francisco. I think I may have to return, well, a gazillion more times.

Sometimes a picture is worth a gazillion words. San Francisco photographer, Cecilia Austin and I are both so inspired by San Francisco's charms that we couldn't help but want to collaborate together on this Edie Sedgwick (born a California Girl) - inspired fashion shoot featuring the work of two local designers, Abi McCannon and Danielle Due Citta ( http://www.yourcrutch.com/ , http://www.dyno-solo.blogspot.com/ ). We had so much fun traipsing about the city and invading the lobby of the Sir Francis Drake ( http://www.sirfrancisdrake.com ) that we almost didn't realize how late it was getting. photography by Cecilia Austin ( http://ceciliaaustin.com ) couture dress by Abi McCannon ( http://www.yourcrutch.com ) other clothing by Danielle Due Citta ( http://www.dyno-solo.blogspot.com/ ) earrings by Laura Adney-Kepner, Wingflash Designs ( http://wingflash.etsy.com ) hair by Addam Moreno, Iso Hair makeup by Oaeza Pathan, retail manager at Mac Cosmetics, Westfield Mall styling by Amber Mortensen ( http://www.painfullyhip.com ) Special thanks to the San Francisco Visitors Bureau and Six Apart Media for this opportunity. Thanks, Cecilia for the beautiful captures! You can find more later this week at www.painfullyhip.com and http://www.ceciliaaustin.blogspot.com/ .

I've lived in close proximity to San Francisco (as it has to my heart) for most of my life, but have never been lucky enough to call myself a local. As many times as I've been to and enjoyed this enchanting metropolis, I've mostly tackled it like an errand. Shoe shopping. A jaunt. Dinner and a show. But this city is so full of tucked away charms, so shrouded in bohemian sophistication and that famous Left Coast Cool that the only way I've found to really explore San Francisco is to shun any "agendas" and stay the night. Wander. Walk. Get lost in labyrinthine parks, neighborhood speakeasies, and dusty boutiques. Tourists love this city for many reasons, but you'll find your own. Only in San Francisco, can one weekend look like this: an opulent hotel ( http://www.sirfrancisdrake.com ) delirium-inducing indian food ( http://www.lahorekarahisanfrancisco.com/ ) a free 60s makeover at Mac ( http://westfield.com/ ) a chic photo shoot showcasing local designers, Crutch and Dyno Solo ( http://www.yourcrutch.com/ , http://www.dyno-solo.blogspot.com/ ) a cozy irish pub ( http://www.oreillysirish.com/ ) a fresh shellfish deluge overlooking the bay ( http://www.fogharbor.com ) a very long walk over almost the entire length of Golden Gate Park a horse's wedding (don't ask) and a handcrafted beer in the park ( http://beachchalet.com/aboutus/index.php?page=parkchalet ) Yup. I'm pretty sure we did it right, don't you?

Yesterday I had an Edie Sedgwick themed fashion shoot planned with this magnificent metropolis as a backdrop. Very late the night previous, I was informed that my makeup artist had contracted swine flu and couldn't make it. What's a girl to do?? I woke up early the next morning I trotted my naked face over to the Mac makeup counter inside Nordstrom at the gargantuan Westfield Mall. The beautiful Oaeza Pathan, retail manager, greeted me. When I told her of my conundrum, she managed to whip out a fantastic last-minute likeness of Edie between helping customers on a busy saturday for the price of a foundation compact and a set of false lashes. I love Mac makeup. Score one for fashion! The photo shoot went great. We shot in the picturesque Dolores Park, a very busy Haight Street, and the stunning Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Being Edie out on the town that night made everything seem a lot more glamourous. We hit O'Reilly's Irish Pub for beers and Fog Harbor Fish house for some exo-skeletal delights and a great view off Pier 39. I love this city!

After a day of planes, trains and automobiles (read: peanuts, fast food and Power Bars) in the midst of a spot of chilly damp weather, my travel companion and I were absolutely lascivious for some real, steaming, punch-me-in-the-face indian food. Being in no mood to experiment with our ravenous hunger, we opted for the tried and true: Lahore Karahi ( http://www.lahorekarahisanfrancisco.com/ ), a hole-in-the-wall pakistani joint on the edge of the Tenderloin. We'd been there before and had not stopped talking about it since. We ordered the tandoori fish, potato naan, rice, raita and mutter paneer. The fish was sizzling (literally and figuratively), spiced and cooked to perfection. The naan melted in our mouths, oozing velvet mashed potatoes and tangy chunks of cilantro. The paneer was firm and flavorful. The whole things was devastating... and cheap too! Our entire, orgasmic meal cost less than two cocktails at Bourbon and Branch, the painfully hip speakeasy less than 2 blocks away. Cheeks flushed and minds blown, we silently gorged ourselves with the fiery appetite of a thousand soldiers, paid and were gone quicker than you could say the name of the restaurant. We were in a hurry you see, because Lahore Karahi just applied for their still pending liquor license and our mouths were on fire for a chilled IPA.

If there are two Top Things I love in this crazy world that both start with an S, they would be San Francisco and Shopping. Which is why, when the San Francisco Visitors Bureau offered me one of their patented Stay & Shop SF packages the weekend before I was due back in California, I sure as hell changed my plane ticket double-quick-like. What to do? What a question. Having lived only 1.5 hours out of the city for a third of my life, I’ve come to know this city and its multifarious wiles like a good friend. And while I know I have barely scratched the skin of its numerous diversions and plan to dig deeper on this trip, here are a few of many unmissable places I get homesick for when I’m away. The Park Chalet. This opulent little glass building is one of San Francisco’s little secrets. While easily accessible on Hwy 1 at Ocean Beach where it meets Golden Gate Park, its entrance is dwarfed by the decadent Beach Chalet and its back is hidden by eucalyptus and cypress trees, sheltering a little garden where you can grab a handcrafted beer and lounge in an adirondack, if indeed you are required to wait for a table. I can never resist the fried brie or the chopped salad. In fact, I need it in my face RIGHT NOW. Telegraph Hill. A magical land of Escher-worthy stairs, blossoming vines, towering trees and flocks and flocks of emerald green parrots. Worthy of a much decorated documentary, Telegraph Hill is the most scenic climb in the city and ends at zephyr-swept, mural-drenched Coit Tower, my favorite place to bask, nap and tune into the woosh of the sea breathing through the leaves. Taqueria Cancun. Any purist, tourist, local, keener, hipster or otherwise will tell you, this is the only place to get a burrito in the mission district. Why? They slice almost an entire avocado onto every veggie burrito and then grill the outside to crispy, chewy perfection. Oh, my tummy. It yearns. There is also incredible shopping throughout SF, the heart of it near my hotel in Union Square… but while the San Francisco Visitors Bureau was kind enough to house this pauper in a palace for the weekend, the majority of my shopping will be of the window variety. I’m not complaining, no sirree. The windows around this area during the holidays are spectacles of extravagance eclipsed only by the city itself. Included in the package too, is a $50 gift certificate to Westfield Center. And of course, on my itinerary a stop at a secret, epic thrift store, the location of which I have sworn to secrecy. These things are only the beginning of what makes my heart go pitter pat over this city, but over the next few days, I’ll continue this love poem. Thanks again to the SFVB for this opportunity!
