as a producer, i would pay attention to out-of-town or pre-broadway reviews. such reviews can inform you on how to tweak the show for success on broadway. i don't think it is necessary for critics to see pre-broadway performances of a show, but i don't think there is any harm done provided the critic makes clear distinctions between the broadway and pre-broadway productions.

i think it really depends on the movie. movies with iconic songs/soundtracks (like ghost or flashdance) should definitely incorporate those iconic songs *in addition to* originals; however, movies that don't have such iconic songs (like catch me if you can or hairspray) can disregard any background songs from the movie in favor of all original songs.

i regret missing the off-broadway production and original broadway cast (i.e., amy spanger) of rock of ages. i have seen it many, many times since then, but i would have loved to have seen the evolution of the show first-hand.

i'd love to see a musical based on the smiths -- especially the first meeting and collaborations of morrissey and marr and the drama surrounding their breakup.
