Great article. This is what keeps me up at night, not the least because the things that are likely to make grantees love a foundation (tons of multi-year general operating support with little or no reporting) are not necessarily indicators that the foundation's making an impact. Similarly, a charity's ability to attract funding is not necessarily an indicator that they are making more of an impact than a similar organization with a less savvy development and marketing team. Having grantees that can be honest with a foundation about how it operates and the impact it is really having on the organizations and issues it funds is critical.
