We had a friend who was very proud when their young child used the word "confluence." I mean, it's a great word and Michael I use it all the time, because we both walk past the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers frequently and like to tell each other... Continue reading

I got distracted by my day so it's late and I haven't posted. I was too busy running, making eggs and toast, snuggling with the cat, weeding the garden, going to the movies (See How They Run - highly recommended), making dinner, cleaning the kitchen, doing yoga, listening to our... Continue reading

When the apocalypse hits for good, I'm going to be in trouble because I can't fend for myself. Ella knows far more than me about how things work so I will need to stay on her good side. Houses for example. I'm very fortunate to own a nice one, but... Continue reading

I'm a bit tired tonight, so I'm just going to leave this not great photo of a pretty tomato here for your viewing enjoyment. It probably should have spent another day or two on the vine but I picked it from the garden this afternoon because it is going to... Continue reading

Look at this outdoor gym that popped up in a local park courtesy of a grant: As soon as I took this I thought I should wear a better hat next time for you all, but then just now I thought eh, let's get this post done and not worry... Continue reading

The car issue turned out to be the fuel pump, in case you were wondering. Yesterday Donna was going to take a dog to her mom in Rochester (yes), so she gave me a ride out to the car place, we had a lovely catch up for a couple of... Continue reading

Vacations are awesome. Here's me and Ella enjoying a vegan tasting menu at a restaurant we picked at random (location + outdoor + vegetarian) after our trip to the Getty. When you spend less time making decisions, sometimes you end up being happier with the results. Seriously fun and delicious.... Continue reading

Lake Michigan was pretty much perfect. Hiking, birding, sunset cocktails, jigsaw puzzles, local berries, great friends, it was wonderful. Lighthouses! We watched a large commercial ship navigate from the lake, past this lighthouse, up the river and under a drawbridge. Very cool. Then we left the car at Detroit airport... Continue reading

So, then, Retirement Project Number Two is now underway. I'm learning Māori. Or I'm attempting to. I haven't tried to learn a language since 5th form French, way back in high school, and it's one of those things that always intimidates me, like singing in public (a story for another... Ella came to town last weekend and I didn't take any photos of her at all. How's that for being a lame parent? So here's a selfie she took of herself and Jake and sent to me. They flew into Ithaca for her dad's wedding, we drove up there on... Continue reading

I quit my job on Friday. Or at least I tried to. The HR person said I did it wrong (something about the effective date), so I have some calls to make to the retirement system on Monday, then I'll go in later next week and resign correctly. I took... Continue reading

It's the first week of summer, so I'm back to spending my mornings writing. What I discovered this week is that my book is kind of dull and the only way to fix it was to blow it up and put the pieces back together in a different order. Some... Continue reading

Friday was the last day of the school year and of course it ended with the overturning of Roe v Wade, so I've been walking around the neighborhood giving the finger to all the Republican candidate lawn signs. Not that they care about my anger. Or my logic. Or my... Continue reading

Sometimes I swipe right on my phone just to see how old it thinks I am. A lot of the suggestions it has for me are things I really don't care about. How To Use Apple Pay. How To Share Your Health Data With Someone. How To Play Music Hands... Continue reading

P-TECH: Pathways in Technology: Early College High School is what I do at work in the afternoons. These students are identified in 8th grade as promising, but unlikely to go to college because of a number of factors (income, family stuff etc). They come to P-TECH in 9th grade and... I did not intend to plant a vegetable garden this year. As in past few years, we've signed up again for a farm share that will give us more food than we can eat all at once and I'll end up turning a lot of it into soup. So my... Continue reading

According to the yearbook that my students made this year, I am now that teacher. They wouldn't tease me if they didn't like me though, right? Right? I showed this to Ella and she said "Your jokes are funny!" Well, apparently two of us think they are at least. Continue reading

I often use my phone camera as a way to take notes, and just as a way to observe my surroundings when I'm out walking. Here are a few things I've seen lately: Lost dog I have found more dogs on walks than you might think. I was out running... Continue reading

This week I took Olive to the vet because she was making horrible hacking sounds that weren't the usual overly dramatic noises of a cat bringing up a hair ball. Turns out she has a serious heart condition and now she's on blood pressure meds and a diuretic and she's... Continue reading

There've been some decision in my life that I made pretty quickly, that just felt right. Quitting my first ever post-college job to go on my OE. (If you don't know what that is, the Wikipedia link that takes you to is pretty comprehensive. Mine got cut short, but that... Continue reading

The big drama of the past week was the nor'easter that dumped a ton of snow on us. Snow this late in April does happen, but not usually this much, and because it wasn't January-cold, the snow was wet and heavy. And because many trees were already in leaf, that... Continue reading

Today is the last day of my Spring Break. I spent the week grading, reading, and organizing photos. The photos are a mammoth task, as I have back ups all over the place and duplicates of files in different sizes, and I'll probably never be done sorting them, but that's... Continue reading
