Yes, the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens does indeed focus in a snappy fashion. I've made some great portraits of family and friends with it while just sitting around and chatting with them. The combination of fast AF and tap-to-focus-and-shoot using the rear LCD on my E-M1 allows me to just have a conversation, maintaining eye contact and quickly capture very natural portraits.
Panasonic 42.5mm: The Everyman Alternative
I hate to admit to ignorance professionally, but hey, when you're ignorant, you gotta 'fess up to it—it's only fair to people. So I admit I don't yet know how to distinguish between the fast-focusing Micro 4/3 lenses and the slow-focusing ones...although I've experienced it, in comparing the P...
Have you tried using card recovery software to try and get the images back? Usually when you "delete" a file the data is still there, just no longer on the table of files. If you haven't overwritten the space with something else, recovery software can often get the images back for you.
Open Mike: It Was Inevitable
Doing the test of the UHS-II card the other day I accidentally (or thoughtlessly) erased a card that was half full of new images from new shooting. Pictures I really wanted. And can't take again. Augh. In my early days with digital I inadvertently deleted one file that I really wanted. Fortunate...
Dials and knobs are great for quickly determining settings as you mentioned, until it gets dark. Then screens become more useful. Maybe Fuji should add illuminated dials and knobs to the feature list for the X-T2.
Fuji X-T1: Knobs 'n' Dials
One thing I liked about old-fashioned mechanical cameras, and one thing I like about the Fujifilm X-T1 , is that I can tell at a glance how the camera is set. And by "at a glance" I mean visually, from hard, secure, physical settings. Hey, I'm a photographer; I'm a visual person. I like seeing...
What is your name?
What is your quest?
What is your favorite color?

Ask Mike
Well, this is interesting. For the first time in a long time I have near-total writer's block. Just can't think of a thing to say. Anyone got a question? Maybe I can be reactive, since I can't seem to be creative. Mike Original contents copyright 2014 by Michael C. Johnston and/or the bylined au...
Therein lies the beauty of the Micro 4/3 system. The sensor is smaller so it only uses the central area of the lens which tends to be the sharpest in many cases. It also avoids the acute incidence angle at the edges.
Two Reasons...
...Why the new Sony A7r might not be a good workhorse for your adapted Leica lenses. Reason 1: Mechanical slop is already a bit of a crapshoot with just one interface. As an adapter adds two more to the system, the chances for slop are multiplied. See Roger Cicala's article "There Is No Free Lun...
It certainly looks like an interesting beast. I have the RX1 and love it. However, I'll probably wait to see how the lens choices develop over the next year or two.
World's First Full-Frame Mirrorless?
According to the rumors swirling about, we are mere days away from the official announcement from Sony of the world's first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the NEX-like 24-MP A7 and 36-MP A7r. The pictures are from digicame-info.com (Japanese site) via PhotoRumors. PhotoRumors has the (not-ye...
If you build it right (with plumbing and gas in the right spots) it could potentially be a bonus selling point to the next owners. It could be rented out as a studio apartment, house an elderly mother-in-law, or be an awesome room for a teenager.
[It could be all those things, but only if it has a bathroom. And plumbing it would add very substantially to the cost I'm afraid. At that point I'd be 80% of the way to the cost of a second story on the house. --Mike]
Brief Updates
1. I got an email from Maude Schuyler Clay, who confirmed that the Eggleston portrait is hers. She's traveling, though, so her note was brief. 2. I hope to write the NEX-6 wrapup on Wednesday. It might have flaws, but it won't be fiction. 3. So here's what I'm jazzed up about at the moment. I me...
There's also a $50 rebate for the HLD-6 dual grip/battery pack. I just bought one yesterday.
The Camera of the Year...for Less
Well, ain't that nice. Olympus has kindly introduced a series of rebates on the OM-D E-M5, our Camera of the Year for 2012. Basically, you can get $50 to $100 off the camera or kit, and $100 or $150 off each Olympus lens purchased with it, for up to three lenses. The offer covers more than 40 ...
I purchased my body-only GX1 the week it was released in the US from Kenmore Camera, so it's been available sans lens if you looked in the right places.
The GX1 is a great camera and the touch screen (which I initially thought was no more than a gimmick) has been wonderful to use in practice for quickly moving the focus point when shooting.
GX1 and NEX-7
The Panasonic Gx1 and the Sony NEX-7 are now in stock at B&H. Let me 'splain. The custom among cameramakers of late seems to be to reserve early production for kits, meaning a camera bundled with a basic lens; of course, a lot of enthusiasts already have lenses, perhaps even including a kit le...
