The first television set, the Post-it note, the Swiffer mop—they all started as ideas, were born as innovations and established themselves in the consumer marketplace. Unfortunately, not all innovations make it through this life cycle. Nielsen data indicates that two out of every three products fail. Waleed Al-Atraqchi, CEO of global marketing technology company Affinnova, discusses this “ugly truth” in the Boston Globe. Here’s how he sums up the reasons for failure: 1. Teams tend to get locked into their “first cut” idea, causing them to rule out many alternatives and, ultimately, what is the most viable foundation for the... Continue reading

In the midst of upgrading and rebuilding throughout Boston, Faneuil Hall Marketplace has recently gotten the memo. A redevelopment plan for Quincy Market has been in the works since 2012 and, though it has gotten a slow start, will be presented to the Landmarks Commission this Tuesday. The preliminary plan includes the addition of escalators as well as two-story tenants encased in glass “sheds.” When approved, this downtown hub will add to the list of rejuvenations on the calendar for our great city. The master plan is being crafted by New York-based Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. and Biederman Redevelopment Ventures Corp.... Continue reading

In addition to industry innovators and entrepreneurs, a critical category of Bostonians will be honored this week at BostInno's 50 on Fire. The chain of events to follow the Boston Marathon will go down in history, as will the remarkable bravery of individuals who were "beacons of light in the times we needed it most." We are thrilled and honored to share this celebration with those individuals who made a tremendous impact during a critical point in Boston's history. We thank them for their bravery, and look forward to Thursday night's festivities. Via http://bostinno.streetwise.co/2013/12/02/50-on-fire-honors-a-special-catego/ Continue reading

Each time a British Airways plane flies overhead, a digital billboard in the U.K. shows a young child pointing to the sky, encouraging passersby to look up. The billboard shows real-time flight information, so viewers can see where the plane left from and its destination, leaving prospective customers to daydream about their next vacation. According to The Globe and Mail, billboard-owning companies such as Clear Channel have been working to revitalize the traditional medium and engage customers in powerful ways. This British Airways campaign does just that, while also engaging viewers through #lookup. Via The Globe and Mail Continue reading

The 97 granite plinths, tinted windows and stone walls of the Boston Public Library’s Johnson Wing have been said to make the library unwelcoming and anti-urban. Architect William Rawn says “the building is unloved because it doesn’t open itself up to the city.” Rawn’s firm has recently been commissioned to renovate the Johnson Wing. Rawn also designed the library’s new East Boston branch, which opened earlier this month. In addition to boosting access and attendance, BPL President Amy Ryan hopes the project will enhance the children’s library and fiction shelves as well as add a new teen lab, more restrooms... On Monday morning, joining The Ad Club for its CMO Breakfast was Barbara Messing, CMO of TripAdvisor, a 2,000-person company that launched from a cramped place above a pizza shop 13 years ago. Messing offered some words of advice for young brands that continue to build her company’s success. Understand your value proposition: Be clear on how your brand and what you offer differentiates from your competitors. Hone in on your messaging: All messaging must reflect what your brand is about. Make engagement easy: Learn more about your consumer and enhance their experience with you by giving them a way... Continue reading

It turns out we have a lot in common with Kanye West (aside from our mutual love of music). Kanye spoke at the Harvard Graduate School of Design last Sunday, where he shared his passion for design: “I really do believe that the world can be saved through design, and everything needs to actually be ‘architected,’ and this is the reason why even some of the first DONDA employees were architects that started designing T-shirts instead of buildings. But just to see the work actually be actualized.” DONDA is Kanye’s media and design agency he started in 2012. Among other... Continue reading

Social media first began as a way to connect with other people, perhaps an old friend or family member that lives across the country. In a culture that is consumed by technology the role it plays on day to day tasks are constantly changing. Instagram is fairly new to the social media circuit, making its debut in October 2010. The app was unique to any other social media feed, because its sole focus was photography, specifically snapshots on the go. Instagram was first introduced as an Apple iPhone app. The concept was so unique that people ate it up. How... Continue reading

The Government Center Garage is a 5-acre barrier separating Government Center, the North and West Ends, Beacon Hill and the Bulfinch Triangle. The Boston Globe calls it “an embarrassing throwback to a period in Boston’s history when city planners elevated architectural objects … over people.” Soon, it will add to Boston’s vibrant urban renewal; it will not sever the city’s core but connect it, as yet another ugly parking garage is torn down and made new. The Government Center Garage Project has finally gotten a stamp of approval from the BRA and will begin a six-building redevelopment consisting of 812... Continue reading

In the past couple of years Boston has seen an influx of food trucks around town. You might catch yourself asking, why order food from what looks like a disguised UPS truck? If you are looking for a particular truck you can always visit a handful of websites that track the trucks, like roaminghungar.com. So what is the upside to having a curbside lunch? Well for one, the food... Continue reading

The Proverb team recently joined our friends, Post Road Residential & Bozzuto Management at The Batch Yard in Everett, MA to celebrate the luxury apartment buildings topping out ceremony. The celebration signifies the completion of the structure’s frame. During the ceremony the final piece of steel is raised into place, marking absolute height achieved by the structure. Those in attendance included many close to the project and those looking forward to its completion; construction workers, architects, developers, investors, soon-to-be residents, surrounding community members, and Proverb were all able to catch a glimpse. Proverb’s Founding Principal, Daren Bascome was proud to... Continue reading

The Nike swoosh, the Chanel c’s, the McDonald golden arches, all are iconic symbols people associate with a brand or product. The Boston Red Sox “B” is no different. It is nationally recognized with the ALCS 2013 champions and has been for over 100 years. From the shape of the letter, elegantly crafted to stand out, to the deep red hue, the B is far from unrecognizable. In lieu of the World Series, the city has become alive with fans sporting their crimson and royal blue apparel, decorated with none other, the B. So, what is it about the second... Continue reading

Amy Sillman, Not Your Average Painter In the age of technology people want everything from information to entertainment fast and easy. Mass amounts of information are now readily available at our fingertips. The art community has benefited from this significantly as computers and social media have become a pivotal source for viewing photographs, painting, exhibition advertisements, and more. But has this growing trend hindered painters? Today when people view an image of a painting it is a photograph, which goes to show that painting has taken a back seat to photography. Reminding art enthusiasts the canvas is as important as... Continue reading
