Either you had a tripod and a remote trigger or you made friends with someone in order to get that picture of you riding! Or was that your doppelganger? I'm needing an adventure. Next Spring, Big Bend?
Great story as always. Getting lazy with one log post instead of daily posts? And where is the map?

Yaaahoooooo! And now MGB rides the Burgman....?

Thanks Doug! Now if I could just zoom in to see the actual roads....

I feel kinda like those folks that watch a season's worth of TV shows in one sitting! Nothing like a marathon blog reading session, especially about a two-wheel journey. I've tried to figure out what roads you took - can you post your actual route? The itch is getting stronger now. I'm officially one year removed from my ride. I've got to figure out how to swing owning a motorcycle and a house.... Good thing we both have partners that give us the freedom to ride!

Speaking as someone who just rode his bicycle to work on unfriendly Nashville streets, I wholeheartedly resonate with your linkage of risk and faith. In my life, risk is indeed what keeps me sharp and out of any rut that obstructs me from hearing the still small voice. I remember getting my first iPod years ago and tried using it running, blading, and motorcycling. Absolutely hated it. One of the main reasons I ride/run/hike is to be out of any cocoon that blocks my awareness of my (well, God's actually) world. The sights, smells, and sounds that you pick up make the experience immersive, not just a transitive journey on hermetically sealed couch. And that describes my philosophy of journeying through life as well. We're both blessed with partners that understand and accept our risk taking. It's probably one of the reasons they were attracted to us at the beginning. Once you add children and mortgages it gets a bit more tricky, but I believe it is possible to still live deliberately, not falling into the pattern that society often constrains us to. And risk is my primary method to make that happen. Ride on! Paul

Next task: Build amphibious scooter. Sell to military. Retire to join my Uncle Doug on his trips.

Glad to see Alabama as the first recorded welcome. I hear it's friendly down there.

Once again, you are a better man than I... There is no way I'd get on a two wheeler knowing I have a day of rain ahead of me. It's not so much the rain as the other vehicles. I hope you're travelling the roads where traffic is light!

A shave and a haircut or only a haircut?

95 today, 97 tomorrow. Did I really move from California to Nashville on purpose?

I'd love it if you find time to hunt out some cottage industries around Hue and how they are reacting to the change. When I was there, I saw chopsticks, incense, silk fabric, clay pots, and rice wine all being made in homes. Have they faded away as market efficiencies chip away at their labor advantages? Or are the simply moving upstream and doing more complex tasks? Curious minds never sleep...
Sounds like Nashville.... I'm sweating with you as part of my support for your trip!

Now that I am officially motorcycle-less, reads like this are a bit harder. But, I had devolved into just commuting with mine, so saw no value in bringing it East. But I hope one day to have a small bike just for these type of trips!!

Once again, you add to my admiration of an Uncle who refuses to just fade away and instead is reaching higher and higher with his dedication to a whole life and a Holy life. Congrats on reaching a publishing milestone that many never reach!

And I pray I can follow in the footsteps of my uncle. You continue to set an amazing example of how to live life intentionally, graciously loving anyone who falls in your path of life.

Great writing, as always. But do you realize how many folks now have a certain David Bowie song running through their head. "Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older Time may change me But I can't trace time"

Hooray!! The Burgman seems perfect for you, though I can't imagine what it will be like in the heat down there. Now all I want to know is if you're going to ride it to the reunion...?

If this is what retirement is all about, I'm ready to retire right now! Thanks for sharing your journey - I am living vicariously through my Uncles! I'm hoping to do the same thing after the reunion in July, bum around some small towns in Appalachia like Betsy Lane, where I spent a week in H.S.
