Click just below the little box under the photo of my book, where it says "SUBSCRIBE TO THIS BLOG!" Thanks for asking.
Pia, I'm so glad you came upon this website, too! Here are two others for you: At you'll find an article called "7 Reasons Why Kids Need Recess." You can print this up (as long as the source is credited) and pass it along to help with your advocacy. At the BAM Radio Network ( you'll find interviews with experts on the topic of recess, physical activity, and play. Good luck!
Agreed, Tara! There's also so much more to our sons than trucks and transformers! I remember that when I was a kid my younger brother had a doll. It was a sailor doll, and he got so much flack from family members for having it! It makes me so sad that we don't value the nurturing side of males in society.
Kristen, you have a right to be infuriated and a responsibility to act as your child's advocate! If you behave and speak reasonably, it doesn't matter what anyone at the school thinks. The practice of withholding recess, particularly from children who really need it, is not only insane but cruel and bordering on child abuse. Check out the info at the website of the American Association for the Child's Right to Play: And I would also suggest you listen to my interview with Doug Fiore for Body, Mind and Child. Go to the Parents Channel at www.bamradionetwork, and look for his interview titled "Handling Difficult Teachers & Insane School Policies." This should help!
It is shocking, as is the fact that arteriosclerosis is beginning at age 5 and 6- to 10-year-olds are dying of sudden cardiopulmonary arrest! Thanks for your comment. Rae Pica Moving & Learning Body, Mind & Child 603-776-7411
