Great post, Paul! Reminds me a bit of an article in The Atlantic from a few years back: "My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski." http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2008/07/is-google-making-us-stupid/6868/ I don't want to sound too facetious, but if saying that "engagement requires commitment" is like saying "people need air", then saying that most Media is shallow is like saying "engagement requires commitment." Most movies are unwatchable, most news stations are babble, and most tweets are worthless. It's on the individual to have a filter that finds the great voices - like yours, Drew's and a host of others I wouldn't have discovered without Twitter and blogs. I completely agree with your observations, but I don't think it's any more likely for the abusers to get tired and go away than it is for spam e-mail to disappear. They're not going anywhere, we just have to get good at using filters.
