The music piracy issue is far from dead and Hypebot should not stop with reporting about new reports and researches. The debate is still important in 2011 and is an example for many other fields in new media too. I wrote a more elaborate reaction to this post on my blog:

"If Steve Jobs feels like it, he can invent subscription music – tomorrow." Great quote! I think it's true too. Apple looks for several 'vectors in time' and connects them to build their new products. All the ingredients for a great subscription service seem to be present nowadays, and current trends such as mobility and always being connected, should be able to support such a service in the coming years too. I like the comparison that you make between piracy and a Research & Development arm! Without wanting to dive into the downloading vs buying discussion, your comparison stresses the point that I wanted to make. Instead of solely condemning and fighting it, a lot of entertainment companies and services could learn valuable lessons from piracy cultures on several levels.

I completely agree with listing Johns. Read the book for my thesis and it really gives a comprehensive view on piracy, wrapped in an easy to read writing style. Will check out The Pirate's Dilemma soon!

@Suzanne That's an interesting point and I agree with you. It's one of the things that is indeed changing, and I think it's a matter of opinion whether this is a good or a bad thing. @Justin Curation of metadata can indeed be annoying, but eventually it does enable you to engage with your collection really quick in ways that were not possible before. E.g. Finding all the works of an artist in a given period with just a few clicks.
