Ruth, thank you so much for taking the time to post these. It gave some excitement and color to a drab day at work. :)
Mexico DF: Lunch at Quintonil
My apologies; I've been living in a whirlwind over the past few days, and I've had no time to post the promised notes on two great meals in Mexico City. But I'm sitting on a train, heading to Boston, and Amtrak's famously fussy internet has finally kicked in. So quickly - before it deserts me...
Oh please don't apologize for another "ancient" Gourmet recipe - I'm finding them fascinating!
What is a Fireplace Oyster?
Sorry - can't seem to get enough of this January 1951 issue of Gourmet. There's a delight - and a riddle - on every page. Consider, for example, this ad for "fireplace oysters" from the "oldest oyster cultivators in U.S.A." I hoped that the J & JW Elsworth Company was still cultivating their o...
Ruth, I wish my children COULD know you! :)
Covers III
Thanks everybody, for your comments on Comfort me with Apples. I have to admit that when I started reading comments on Amazon like, "I wouldn't want my children to know this woman," I was taken aback. But then the sixties, seventies, pre-Aids world was a very different place. On to Garlic and ...
I agree wholeheartedly with goodiedelight, I LOVED the book. Risque'? Pah! I thought it was great. :)
A Book and its Cover, Part II
Comfort Me With Apples This is the book that's sold least-well of anything I've written. I've always wondered if it was because of the contents, which some people find risque, or because nobody's nailed the cover, in any language. Original hardcover. Current paperback Korean version...
I found out about this while I was watching an episode of "House Hunters International". The owner's son-in-law and daughter were relocating to this small town in Italy and were looking for a house to buy. The SIL was going to work on the olive farm. The idea was so intriguing, I looked it up on the net.
What a great idea for a holiday gift!
Gift Guide Day 16
Adopt an olive tree? What a cool idea. Here’s how it works: You go to a beautiful website and scroll through the various orchards on offer. There are more than a dozen in Le Marche and Abruzzo, with a picture of each, a little biography of the olive farmer, and a description of the oil they...
Thank you Ruth! Love seeing you on Top Chef Masters! Was at Incanto in SF a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately missed Chris, who was jetting to NY to see his family.
Best, Roberta

YES! I've always compared them to chestnuts, and you're the only person who has made the same comparison - I love them, and they are very easy to find in California.
Things I Love 2
White sweet potatoes, with their fluffy flesh, have a nutty flavor that is unlike that of any other potato. Think chestnuts. Cooked until near melting, they turn into a flavor catalyst. Add a bit of butter and a splash of maple syrup, and they make a great impromptu “cake” for dessert. Spoon in ...
