I have noticed the toll that the political events of this year have taken on readers and writers I know. In Canada, I am between both the UK and the US, and it is impossible not to be horrified and saddened by the turn we have seen in those countries (which is, of course, not bound by oceans or borders). My year has been one of great personal loss and bereavement, so I suppose I would have to say sadness is the predominant theme for me at this moment. The book that is currently pulling me in is an experimental blend of literary reflection, memoir, and poetry—The Inevitable Gift Shop by Will Eaves. I read his The Absent Therapist roughly two years ago when it was shortlisted for the Goldsmith Prize. There is something about the way he turns a phrase, especially in the most personal fragments, that catches me up. I read Therapist looking for models of experimental writing to guide me. I return to this more recent work having published some key pieces this year, but now at another turning point. It simply seems to touch on so many currents in my life, personally, and as a reader and writer.
