Simple/house church has been one of the great opportunities for me to step out of the boat at the word of Jesus in order to follow him with greater abandon. God spoke clearly to me at the beginning of this... Continue reading

Let me just say it that, yes, gatherings of God’s people are important. But here is the problem. We continue to divide up life in our thinking between sacred/holy and non-sacred/non-holy. And, our time spent in a church location or... Continue reading

When I speak to Disciple-Making Movement leaders in Africa and ask them about prayer, they always say something to the effect of, ‘Movements of any kind are always accompanied by prayer movements.’ For them, this is simply a natural or... Continue reading

Let's catch up! We trained a guy in this region of Nigeria whom I only refer to as 'J' for security reasons. He works in a challenging region where persecution, killing, and kidnapping of Christians is common. He is good at taking key concepts, like this graphic, and putting it in a format where it is easy to pass along.

In one crisis-ridden area of Northern Nigeria, the following simple document is releasing the church to catch fire in the midst of persecution. Even militant Muslims are finding the simple joy of finding and following Christ. The document: Within this... Continue reading

Perhaps it’s the season of life I am in, but it seems to have been a year of personal loss: saying goodbye first to a mother-in-law, then to a good friend, and more recently to two very dear friends. Losses,... Continue reading

Wolfgang Simson keeps us up-to-date with the house church movement globally. Here is his latest summary: "In total there are currently (mid 2021) at least 22.6 million house churches worldwide with a total of around 300 million members. They are,... Continue reading

Mike, I am still here and appreciate your concerns and questions. We have seen a great deal of fruit in children growing up in this environment from the standpoint of these young people discovering at a young age that they 'are the church' and have much to share when the church gathers together. Many develop a profound sense of ownership of their faith and their church experience. Regarding multiplication, this has been more difficult to attain in our comfortable western culture (though we continue to see this profoundly in other contexts). But multiplication does not have to mean 'leaving the nest.' In many cases, people and families remain rooted in their parent group while simultaneously planting daughter groups. Sometimes, they meet less often with the parent group but they still remain connected.

Many years ago, as we began inviting people to consider 'church at home,' I wrote the following description. It may still be relevant for stirring up our imagination for what God can do in and through His people. Imagine Being... Continue reading

Consider how God goes about changing a nation (taken from this op-ed in Newsweek) and what we can learn from this for our own local contexts? Something religiously astonishing is taking place in Iran, where an Islamist government has ruled... Continue reading

Who is the hero in the story? As humans, we love heroes. We want to create heroes. We even want to be heroes. Our heroes are slightly more than human. They are important. They are politicians. Or people of great... Continue reading

Planting seeds of the word of God, as God leads, is always good and never futile. He calls each of us to sow in different fields. I appreciate your faithfulness and also your encouragement that God is the one who makes things grow. Let's keep planting and watering without regard for recognition!

Tim, your evaluation seems sound. For myself, I feel the best way to challenge and correct the status quo in church and in mission is to live the commands of Christ myself and let the fruit of that lifestyle speak for itself. “Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us (Phil 3:17).” I am sure you feel the same way. God help us to be faithful.
