day trips- best family time ever. we try to do one a month...make a list of them every January, so when the day appears- we just pick one, rather than debating what to do.....

Courtney- I agree 100%. and I am so sorry for your family's loss. These children are our gifts, and it's our job to be there for them, every day, in every way. We only get one chance, and they only get one childhood.

Oh Katrina, I am SO glad for you, and I know EXACTLY what you went through. This summer we went through a very similar experience when I was told that I had a tumor on my aortic valve that could break off at any moment. We spent two weeks contemplating my mortality, &/or impending open heart surgery. I was told I should do NO activity, but no one could tell me what that meant...perfect for August home with two kids, right? It is a harrowing, contemplative time- and I hope that in your case it did give you a greater appreciation of what you have, like it did for me. Life is SO precious, and it's easy to take the moments for granted!

We have begun discussing at regular intervals what they want to do/don't want to do (sports wise- like before we pay for the session)and allow them to be a part of the discussion before the check is written. After it's written, they are in. Rain or shine. If they aren't feverish or barfing, they go. Complaining won't help. I remind them that TaeKwonDo costs our family $200 a month (crazy, right?) and if they'd like to talk about quitting, we can have a family discussion, but if they don't want to go today- that's too bad. We paid, they go. Don't feel badly. They don't feel badly when you're paying for their stuff. Also, think about what you go to that you don't want to go to....practices, meetings, volunteer shifts....do you cry and complain? No. Want to? Somedays, Yes :)
