Consider the analog in deaf sign language. Finger spelling words l-e-t-t-e-r by letter has a fundamental speed limit that has to do with the time it takes to form the hand shapes. Concept or word signs take little longer to make than a few letters, no matter how sophisticated the thought being conveyed. Its much much more efficient. Even common word endings like -ing and -ation become one fluid hand motion that is made and recognized as a unit. Fascinating topic. Thanks for the blog and the comments
