Best of luck in your new role! At Ringio we're trying to "enterprisize" consumer voice services like Skype and Google Voice. I share with you the view that turning insights gained with consumers into business products is a pattern with staying power. Where our point of view probably differs is: should we help recalcitrant behemoths join the internet age, or should we give new challengers that get it the weapons to beat them? Also, I'm not sure it's enough to build a company with an enterprisized product but then continue to have the traditional structure of an enterprise software company with "sales", "marketing", "professional services", etc.... there's a better approach to building a company and going to market, and that is just as interesting. And if we succeed, we'll finally have created a new model of company that it would suck less to work for.

It's important to remember WHY we gave online shopping sites a moratorium on taxes. It was so that this nascent form of business would have an unfair advantage against the traditional, incumbent, bricks-and-mortar retailers. Online shopping has come a long way in the last 15 years and there is no justification anymore for any retailer, of any kind, to get those tax breaks. Small online retailers have to find a model to compete with large bricks and mortar retailers that is based on something other than a tax advantage.
The video has very cute aesthetics and a dose of brutal social commentary about the company. It's interesting to see how disjoint the visual tone and its underlying message are!

I don't recall anybody calling the set of FTP clients "The FTP Market", or the set of web browsers "The HTTP market". RSS is a good solution to an engineering problem. You can build useful applications with it. A market to me is an economic opportunity that companies with good business models can exploit. And a business model is what seems to be richly lacking among the companies behind a lot of those clients.

Why do we insist on burdening entrepreneurs with the responsibility of providing healthcare to employees? This seems to stem from a time when we had very little expectation from the government other than to levy taxes, keep the rule of law and have a military; a time when it made more sense for large corporations to take the initiative and solve the problem. But since the economic model of value creation has dramatically changed, wouldn't it make more sense to shift the burden to a different party? That's what I argue here, at least.

I think this is pretty neat. In my opinion, what would give RIM more brownie points with developers would be a developer SDK from this decade, not last. I mean: modern frameworks, extensive libraries, emulators that actually emulate... that kind of thing.
I've experienced the same behavior in Spain. All my friends and family who live there and have iPhones mostly leave their 3G turned off and use a jailbroken-type app to temporarily turn it on when they need it. You will find that if you turn 3G on in Spain, the battery will die even faster than in the US, because there's a lot more 3G coverage. What I wish Apple did was a sort of "adaptive" 2.5/3G roaming where the device would pick its network based on the throttling of data required. Sam

Manuel... mi pésame. Qué elegía tan sencilla y tan bonita. Al final de la vida, qué mejor que medirla por el impacto que dejó en otros. --Sami
