When we leave the house, we usually leave Sora in our bedroom. He has our nice soft bed to sit on, room to move around, etc. Ideally he'll be in the crate as that's the safest place for him when unattended, but he's not used to being in there yet - so we're still training him. Yesterday we went out for a few hours while he was in the room. Upon our return, we were greeted with Sora's creativity :). He'd gotten bored and chewed up two of Akuri's paintings. Here he is downstairs sitting on the evidence. He does... Continue reading

Thanks Kirsty... i share your feelings completely of course. Sora's doing v well today. Still on pain meds but he seems almost back to normal. I'll post again over the weekend but he looks well on his way to a speedy recovery from the extracted tooth.

We had some bad news today. Sora went into the dentist to have a cracked tooth extracted. During the initial consultation, the dentist mentioned that his upper canine next to the cracked tooth looked gray / discoloured and could have been damaged. There was an area of skin that looked suspicious that caused a lot of pain for him when touched as well. The dentist said he'd take a closer look during the xrays - suspecting that it may have been from the same trauma (i.e. gunshot) that lost him his sight. I received a call during the afternoon from... Continue reading

Hi everyone. Have been overrun with work lately and no time to post so making a quick update. Things with Sora have been going great. It is incredible how he gets around the house. He's learned "down" properly now and we've trained him "wait" which was difficult without hand signals. Fortunately he's very food motivated :). He may even be *finally* ending his desire to climb into my lap from the back seat when I'm driving! That one was definitely a bit challenging. While out on the leash, Sora is great. Seeing him start to walk with a higher gait... Continue reading

Saturday was a beautiful autumn day in Seattle so we took off in the late afternoon to catch the sunset at Discovery Park. The park is in Seattle and is great for hiking / trails / etc. This was Sora's longest walk so far - he did great and had a blast. He got a little cold at the end as the sun was setting but a run through the fields back to the car fixed that. It's amazing how he seems completely fearless when outside. Anyway, here's a few pics of the afternoon. Akuri and Sora Our other boy... Continue reading

Haven't had any time to post this week so here's a quick collection of pictures from this week. These are shots of Sora around the house. He continues to grow in confidence and is getting pretty good at some basic commands (sit / down / stairs / step up / etc). He LOVES to climb which can be challenging when he decides he fancies to stretch his legs and try to come up front while we're driving down the Interstate in the car :). We went for a long walk through Discovery Park this weekend - I'll post some from... Continue reading

Week one has gone great... So many positives, it's easy to forget so let me list them: * Sora's settled in nicely, gets on amazingly with everyone he meets and has integrated into our family as if he was always here. He's constantly showered with affection * He's familiarized himself with the house really quickly. Sora has a free run of the house and is able to get around wherever he wants to go by himself. Incredible to watch. It wasn't without challenges though - first time up / down the stairs took 15 minutes each way. He's able to... Continue reading

Learn how Online pictures are available for 30 days Got a call from the vet last night - and things look good on the blood work we had done. Only thing that really showed up was some mild anemia - which considering everything that has happened to him is not surprising. Parasites, ringworm and a bunch of other things all showed up negative so was thrilled to hear that. On other fronts, Sora's really starting to settle in now. He's moving up and down the stairs much... Continue reading

First visit to the vet... went well and things generally look ok so far. We took some blood for some general tests and are waiting to hear back on some other results for things he might have picked up from the time he was on the street. He's clearly underweight (you can see this from the previous pictures) but we're confident he'll fill out quickly. Considering what he's been through though he seems to be pretty healthy - hopefully we'll get good news back tomorrow on the blood work. One thing that is very obvious is just how quickly people... These were shots we took over at his foster home. He is a great boy. Full of life, loves to chase and a bundle of fun. There's a pic here of him being rolled on his back - v good temperment. Contact Animals First Foundation for more info. Continue reading

Sora took his first proper walk tonight on leash. He did great. He's still getting the hang of getting up and down on the sidewalk but is slowly starting to recognise our vocal cues to "step up" and "stairs" which warn him of changes in elevation. I checked back a number of times to see him walking side by side with Akuri and shook my head - just incredible the amount of trust he has, and the courage he shows. V cool. He's even starting to give the leash a good pull when he's after something to sniff. He's still... Continue reading

The past 24 hours has been a huge adventure for Sora. He's settling in great. He climbed our stairs to the bedroom last night for the first time (which took about 15 minutes). Rio even tried to help by running up and down the stairs to show how easy it was : ). After that Sora immediately found a comfy space no the bed - amazing how he loves to climb anything that is high and soft ! This morning started with him taking his first car ride with us. We took a trip out East for about a half... Continue reading

This is a blog about an amazing dog, Sora. Sora (pronounced "Sola" which means Sky in Japanese) became part of our family on Saturday 19th 2009. Previously named "Upward" Sora was driven 3,000 miles from S.Carolina to us and arrived this morning. He was saved by a wonderful rescue shelter called Noah's Ark after he was left to die from a horrific attack. Sora is blind. He lost his sight after someone put a shotgun full of bird shot to his face and pulled the trigger. You can read a bit more about his story here (there are many... Continue reading
