When I lived in Arizona, I used to correct the factual inaccuracies in those mailings, then send them back in the provided envelopes. They beg you to put on your own stamp to save their money, but it's a postage-paid envelope, so I'd usually write a message to the effect of "thanks for the free mailing and for wasting money on me." I don't know if any staffer actually opens and reads those, but of the three or four that I'd get a year, it seemed that my informative notes never got through to the people writing the "surveys."

I wonder how many of those ceremonial checks are handed out in a year. At a minimum cost of about $45 each, that must add up.

So, Thane, you're saying that we should not expect our elected officials to hold our other elected officials accountable because they are weak or under investigation or have conflicts of interest, and that citizens should step up and do the dirty work of removing Arpaio and Thomas from power but that you are too terrified of these men to do it yourself? I hope I'm not the only one who sees the problem here. Maricopa County needs to find a few people who don't work at the New Times who are willing to stand up against these petty tyrants and put them in their places. Those of us in the rest of the state are counting on Maricopa's citizens to step up for the good of the whole state.
