My Hebrew is absolutely rudimentary, but here's my best shot:
First two lines:
From (at?) the house of our fathers (beit avot)... the house
second lines:
something from the blood (min hadam) ... mezuzah (next to? in place of? as a sign of?)
I'm sure someone can do a better job here.
Life is skittles and life is matzah
by Doctor Science (Obligatory Tom Lehrer reference) It's that time of year again! Two male cardinals are working out a territory boundary in the back yard, we had windows open all night, daffodils are blooming their bloomin' 'eads off, and I've spent all day in the kitchen: A page from the Ryla...
After two separate Dean's Date-induced all-nighters (also at Princeton) ended in seizures, I swore off all-nighters and have been pretty good about sticking to that. But I guess I have a stronger incentive than most.
My greatest predictive failure
by Doctor Science – occurred late in the spring semester of my senior year at college. I looked up from the paper I was writing, out the window to where the sky was lightening over Princeton with the dawn. I said to myself: "When you're out there in the Real World™, you won't be able to procrasti...
Gary - I hate to say this, but have you tried keeping a word (or pick your word processing program of choice) document with a backup copy of all your comments? Copying and pasting before hitting "Post" might allow you to save some of the deep hot flame for issues that more merit your passion and attention. Just sayin ;)
Good To Know
by hilzoy It's nice to get definitive proof that some bloggers really don't bother to do basic research before posting something, and we got some today. Here's a scary article from Investment Business Daily: "It didn't take long to run into an "uh-oh" moment when reading the House's "health care...
I'm under the impression that another reason new antibiotics aren't being developed very fast is that /we've hit all the easy targets already/. Simply the R&D is much harder than it used to be. If a building cements over its windows, building a better ladder to climb in through them simply doesn't do any good. Which makes it all the more critical that we use the antibiotics we have responsibly, lest ALL bacteria block up their windows.
The Wrong Way To Use Antibiotics
by hilzoy Good news from the NYT: "The Obama administration announced Monday that it would seek to ban many routine uses of antibiotics in farm animals in hopes of reducing the spread of dangerous bacteria in humans. In written testimony to the House Rules Committee, Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, princ...
Hilzoy, thank you for everything you've taught us and shown us. You were the first blogger I started reading and are still the primary one, and I sing your praises (almost literally) whenever people ask for blog recommendations. I can't tell you the number of conversations I've had that have started with "Did you see what hilzoy said yesterday...?" I use your writing as an example to myself of how important thorough, careful research is, and of how to do such research well. We'll all miss you.
Bare-Faced Go-Away Bird
by hilzoy First, I'm going to Rwanda this weekend, on vacation. I'm looking forward to it immensely, especially since I discovered that the Bare-Faced Go-Away Bird, which topped my list of Best Bird Names Ever nearly five years ago, lives there. (And did you know that the name 'Watusi' comes fro...
A fifth thanks, hilzoy.
The Uighurs: Compilation
by hilzoy This is a post compiling the questionable and/or false claims that have been made about the Uighurs. It contains a few things I have not said in any of my earlier posts, but its main purpose is to collect these points in one convenient location. I have tried to be thorough; those of yo...
