You're not kidding about the place resembling the Canteen in Ottumwa. Surprisingly I've never been to Mr. Dan's, but it is on my bucket list.

Probably the last Maytag Blue Cheese you'll be enjoying for awhile. They're doing a major recall for listeria. A shame, its a great cheese. https://foodpoisoningbulletin.com/2016/maytag-blue-cheese-listeria-recall-exapnds/

Another place to try some new-fangled tacos in Des Moines is Malo, but try to go there between 4 and 6 pm on weekdays when they're half-off. Otherwise I prefer either Los Laureles or Tacos Villanueva on the 1500 block of E. Grand for the old-school variety.

You were just around the corner from me! I recently went there for a Firetrucker tap takeover and had a sample of a delightful appetizer of rib meat wrapped asparagus.

They probably did forget about it while cooking. It would certainly explain the delay as well.

Food looks great, but I'm rather fond of bangers and mash. Mushy peas and Heinz Beans not so much. ;)

I had a bacon cheeseburger pizza once, cut tavern-style, that had a dill chip atop every slice. It was too much and I had to pick them off.
I love Galesburg. Its been a favorite rest stop of mine for years while traveling by rail. Even once on a trip to Chicago heading back to Ottumwa, I split my ticket up to catch a morning Carl Sandburg for lunch in Galesburg, followed by the afternoon California Zephyr to complete my journey. Also Union Station can be quite hectic for coach passengers queuing up to catch a long-distance train. Its worth it to catch a local to avoid the hubbub.

Good beans are a blessing to find.

The Tavern I at 205 5th Street in Valley Junction, West Des Moines has The Sting grinder on their menu. What I most enjoyed at Tavern South was the Grinder Sting pizza. I'm always on the lookout for a grinder so I'll have get over to Valley Junction one of these weekend afternoons.
You should try the pizzas at Court Avenue Brewing. Quite similar appearance wise and in price, but with a much chewier crust. On Mondays from 4 to 10:30p, and Friday/Saturdays from 11p to midnight the pizzas are half-off. Much affordable for a 10-inch pie.

I love the place for its simplicity, and the luxury of enjoying a chili dog with a beer. The crinkle-cut fries aren't bad here either.

La Pizza House is moving down the street and around the corner to 1440 Maury St. It will reopen on Aug. 21.

I never knew that Rotella made English muffins until I had one for breakfast at the 11-Worth. It was pleasantly decent. A shame Rotella doesn't offer them in the Des Moines area, as far as I know. Rotella also makes a nice soft focaccia roll that I like, perfect for burgers and overstuffed breakfast sandwiches. Other baked goods like hoagie rolls are pretty standard fare at most area grocers and a fair number of restaurants.

I miss breakfast at the Mr. Quick in Ottumwa. They knocked that down some time ago and put up a Walgreens, with a Sonic behind it. Just not the same.

I fondly remember a visit there in the early 70s. Imagine a five year old's first taste of deep fried puffy tacos. Sadly I never returned.

You know about Henry J's on SW Ninth. The filling is bland but their fried taco shell is commendable. I've been told they make a fine sausage sandwich as well. http://slakingfool.blogspot.com/2010/06/dinner-at-henry-js-taco-house.html
