Where does tech death end and prog death begin anymore? It's becoming harder and harder to tell all the time. The new Cognitive EP "The Horrid Swarm" is just another reminder of how blurred the borders have become. Whether you love brutal death metal, progressive shreddage, or some chocolate in... First let me say at the outset that I consider all five of the guys in Fallujah personal friends. My name is in the liner notes for this record as an alleged "notable individual." That's just full disclosure so you know I can't be completely unbiased when I say "The... Continue reading

Soulfulness is not a word you would normally associate with technical death metal but it’s exactly the right term to describe the range of emotions you will encounter on Celestial Pestilence from San Diego’s “Lord of War.” Riding on the powerful sounds of Alexx War’s insistent lead guitar work and... It was a pleasure catching up with Shadows Fall's Brian Fair at Geraldine's in West Springfield, Massachusetts in April of 2011 to hear the latest about the band and to get his insight into the state of the music industry. Continue reading

The weekend before the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival in 2011, I traveled to Geraldine's in West Springfield, Massachusetts to see a Shadows Fall local show and to finally get to meet up with Shane, Alex and Chris from Sorrows of Autumn. Continue reading

Cycle through this playlist to listen to interviews I did with a series of bands including Across the Sun, Arsonists Get All the Girls, Hung, Legacy, Structures, This or the Apocalypse, and Volumes. Continue reading

Structures was one of the big buzz bands at the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. I kept hearing about them but had to miss their set because they were on at the same time as the incomparable Wretched. Since then I've checked them out and they are indeed quite sick and much heavier than what I expected from the name of the band. Continue reading

Last Chance to Reason is now going on its fourth month of being my personal obsession band, enough so that I drove out to glamorous Stockton California to see them in mid-June. Continue reading

Ohio is turning into a real hot spot for up and coming metal bands and I found Legacy is one of the newest standouts in that group. Here I visit with the band's lead singer at the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival Continue reading

At the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival I ran into Jared Monette of Arsonists Get All the Girls. We caught up on what the band was up to ahead of their spring release. Continue reading

At the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival one of the clear standout acts was Portland, Oregon's Across the Sun. Recently signed to Metal Blade, these guys have a distinctive sound. Here I am with Shane the Brain and Alan. Continue reading

At the 2011 New England Metal and Hardcore Festival I caught up with the members of "Hung", a very interesting band that features a Julliard trained violinist on leads. It's the sort of thing that could be a gimmick but isn't. In fact, Hung was one of the heaviest bands I saw the whole time at the festival. Continue reading

Constructed in the summer of 2010, Smaragos is a two-piece exploration of avant-garde cacophony. Partners in progressive, technical death metal giants Son of Aurelius, project architect Max Zigman and vocalist Riley McShane bring together influences ranging from the heaviest of heavy music to the most sublime of compositions of the... That death metal music is heavy is a given. What sets the best bands of that genre apart is the ability to layer in super-technical yet still super-musical guitar solos, heavy breakdowns, compelling drum parts, and even acoustic elements to create an intricate whole. There aren't many bands in the world today that do all of that better than Burning the Masses. Continue reading

This is what's so sucky about the economics of music today. The guys in Lazarus A.D. get signed to a significant label, put out a very solid record, and they're reduced to having to ask fans for money after getting burgled (I won't go into my rant here about the... Continue reading

Drove down to San Diego hoping to see Burning the Masses but they had to cancel due to sk8ing related injuries. Still got to see my buds in Fury Never Fades who I profiled in a recent column and who were better live than I expected and I expected good... Continue reading

One of the fun things about writing about music and having lots of cool friends (on social media anyway) is that every now and then someone just drops out of the blue, says we're from 30 minutes up the road and you might like us. When one of the members... Continue reading

Michael: I'm glad you liked it. These guys are based in the East Bay so the next time they play locally I'll give you a shout. The drummer's name is Andrew Baird. In addition to being sick musicians, they're all really great people. Thanks for the comment. Brian

Originally I was going to drive down to Canoga Park just north of L.A. to see my buds in Fallujah and the wonderful Diskreet but when Diskreet had van problems and dropped off the tour, I decided to stay at home, save my vacation days, and go next month to San Diego to see Burning the Masses and Fury Never Fades. One of my clearest wins in picking new up and coming bands has to be for San Diego (by way of Nebraska) shredders Fury Never Fades. If you love heavy music, you must check these guys out. Continue reading
