Oh my goodness, Sandi. I am so sorry. Yes, they are only things, but that doesn't mean you won't miss them and need to take time to mourn them. Hooray for that wonderful jewelry shop!!

I take my son on an occasional "puddle hunt" after it rains. He puts on his boots and I have a towel (or two) ready by the door for when we return. We go for a walk and "hunt" for puddles for him to jump in. It really is a blast! He knows that he can't get me wet (I stand back when we find a really big one!) and I strip him down at the door as soon as we get home--and often head straight to the bathtub! You should try it sometime!!

I love this and definitely am a Free Range leaning parent myself. Some of the challenges I run into are when the parents of other kids my son wants to play with don't share this philosophy. For example, often at the park, my son digs in the dirt or finds the puddles to jump (or even lay down!) in, which is generally fine with me. But almost always there are other moms there scolding their kids to not get dirty/wet/whatever. I figure, why go to the park if you're not going to get dirty? I still let him do it and just feel bad for the other kids who look at him longingly.

I've been here for 15 years now and still love seeing the Capitol Building, monuments, etc!

I love this idea!! Do it! Do it! Plus, you can't ignore the practical benefit of not needing to worry if both of your cars break down at the same time. :)

My four year old son's first year of preschool ends in just a few days. My baby is almost five months old. And, I recently resigned from my part-time job. All this adds up to mean that starting next week,... Continue reading

Great job! Probably even more important than what you actually said was how you said it--totally normal tone for a discussion about a news story, just like all the other stories you discuss from the newspaper. (Kinda' cool to think that while this is a huge deal and so exciting for adults, for our kids it will just totally be taken for granted!)

And isn't it even worse that people don't even respond to wedding invitations??! My cousin is having to follow up with people who haven't responded to her yet. Great advice. (But I'm guessing only the people who already respond will take it to heart!)

Dawn, I think both you answers were perfect! Even the first one that you used to buy time. I heard once that with those "big" questions you should probe a bit to see what they are really asking before launching into some deep discussion with perhaps more details then they want/need/are ready for.

Thanks, Susan! The advantage I have at bedtime is that my 4yo can get dressed, brush his teeth, etc. with minimal help. The advantage you have at the grocery store, I'm guessing, is that your 2yo still fits in the cart! Good luck with your next solo bedtime, I'm sure it will get easier!

Too funny! I am pretty certain you have that "look of insanity" in your eyes more often than just at Costco :) But, really, don't we all??!

So true! Being a Wintertime Mommy is hard. Luckily winter doesn't last any longer than it does around here.

Let me know when you come up with that word for those that "swing both ways" but I think it might just be "mom"! You're such a great writer, Jessica, I'm glad we can find you even more places now!

I'm so glad to know present Jean! How fun, though, to think through this before your reunion. I bet you'll find that your friends have grown and changed a lot, too. Have fun!

Love this post! I try to let the misspellings of my first name roll off my back but it is hard when even close family and friends go with "Amy". My paternal grandmother often misspelled my name on birthday cards. I know it wasn't intentional, but COME ON! I definitely give big kudos/props to people who DO get it right. To make matters worse, I went from one last name that was always misspelled and mispronounced to another that is always misspelled and mispronounced. Ugh!

Our next challenge will be the second dose for the kiddos. Hopefully by the time they need to go back for that, the supply will have opened up a bit. Glad you were successful in your quest to get vaccinated!

Annie -- hope you all feel better soon! News reports around here seem to indicate that the supply will increase in the next week or so. I hope that's the case for you as well.

Stimey - if you can make it into DC sometime soon week, I highly recommend it. Their clinics are very well run and residency does not matter. The lines seem to be shortest in the NE and SE. Good luck and I hope your sister is doing a lot better!!

No matter what ends up happening in the delivery room, you need and deserve doctors who listen to you and give you all the time and attention you deserve. If for that reason alone, it sounds to me like you are making the right decision to change docs.

Love it!! Once upon a time, I, too, attended those fancy shindigs while holding the phone or purse or taking notes for some Big Wig. So long ago.... I definitely agree that the "less is more" approach is a good one to take especially when talking to non-parents about your kids. They want to know a little bit but not all the details!

We traded in our pre-kid Audi for a mini van in April and both have come to love and appreciate the mini van. However, we definitely look forward to going back to an Audi (or something like it!) one day...!
