c-f,
How do you KNOW this stuff??
I was going to suggest the St.Jude thing to her, but I figured that at 25 her cause is not yet lost. (I added the video to this post instead.) =D
The Man of My Dreams!
Posted by Kikita So after posting my cry for help, I took some of your advice. I was at the local mercado, shopping for some basic cooking supplies when I found myself in the aisle where they carry the "velitas." (Apparently they call them "veladoras" in Mexico.) I tried to remember who it ...
Pam,
With your iPhone???
You win again. I can't compete. (sigh)
=D
How an arcade game can double as a personality test or WARNING: Perfectionism can strike at any moment!
Our good friends, Gene and Pam were visiting this week, so of course we met them at Disneyland. ;-) My entire goal for this trip, besides spending precious time with my BFF, was to experience Toy Story Mania, the newest attraction at Disney's California Adventure Park. So, I call my niece: "Hele...
Ody,
Pebble Beach is just about the closest thing to heaven you can get to here in our fair state, especially for golfers. (the barking of the seals becomes "white noise" - don't ask me how I know this.) =D
So many golf courses, so little time...
Okay, so let's say you've been working for the greater part of your adult life. And let's further say that you have worked hard at said job for what seems like a gazillion years. It seems the ideal thing in this situation would be to retire. Am I right? Because there are definitely perks when yo...
I'm having one of those, "hey, she learned something I taught her" moments.
Mami is so proud. ;-)
Kikita the Traveling Cook
Kikita here. I know I've told you before about my African friends and how I totally appreciate and adore them. Well, I just had another very Afro-Cuban evening. Meet Exhibit A: My dear friend Cedric. He is studying to be a chef. Have any of you ever been friends with someone going to culinar...
Nice try, Kel...
P in Pizza Port is pink and round. (trust me. I know this stuff now) This is actually in California Adventures and it's called the Taste Pilot's Grill.

PP is my BFF
My very best friend, Pam P. (how cool is it to still have a best friend at my age??) and Lover of All Things Disney is having a birthday today. You can read about how much I love her here. She is celebrating her birthday at Disneyland (where else?) this week, so in honor of this auspicious occa...
Ileana,
Please remind me as your date gets closer. I'd definitely love to meet you and see your marching boy. =D
Erikita,
Thanks for your kind words. I might just be tempted to do that. Thanks for the encouragement.
Besos,
Marta
The Wish
I was born in May of 1955. At the end of that summer, which my family was spending in Varadero Beach, Cuba, as usual, a friend of my mom's came to visit to meet the new baby. Her name was Conchitica. [NOTE: "Concha" is the Spanish word for shell, as in a Conch Shell.] This particular "Concha...
Ody,
You made it already?? Whoa! I'm so impressed.
So glad you loved it. My kids were a little put off by the mayo, but once they tasted it, they had seconds and even thirds (Jonathan, my growing boy).
Thanks for letting me know.
Besos,
Marta
And then.... the Cuban Family moved in.
Years ago, my big, fat, Cuban family moved to a sleepy peanut-butter-and-jelly neighborhood in Anaheim, California. Our house was at the end of a cul-de-sac where the other families had been living forever. They had their own neighborhood traditions, including a 4th of July Block Party. Life ...
I meant... BCBG Max Azria. See? Designer-retard. =D
But will I have to sing the alma mater??
WARNING: This post is a total over-share. (In fact, I can't believe I'm writing about this at all!) You've been warned. I'm pretty content with my life as it is. Seriously, it's the truth. I'm proud to be Cuban-American and I have an incredible extended family on both sides that I (very obviousl...
c-f,
I was a cheerleader... (are you surprised?) =D
The glasses are made by GUCCI. My fat, black prescription sunglasses are BCBF Max Azria. (this is the only area of my life I insist on designer stuff)

I somehow guessed I'd be hearing from you. Yes, I confess... these are all the places I sent you pictures of. Thanks for sharing my summer. =D

Mario,
Your best friend is good friends with Carnie Wilson?? Shut. UP.
Amazingly talented and courageous woman.
I wrote about my on-going love affair with Brian Wilson here:

We DO have the most fun and the best food, don't we? If you move to California, aqui tienes tu casa. =D

Mica,
Why am I not surprised?
Masquerade!
(Can you guess tonight's movie?) THE original suggestion was a simple one. PerHaps we can have AN end-of-summer barbecue for our residenT yOung thespians. They're here every Friday anyway. Maybe we can watch a Movie, too. Ah, but you know what can happen to the best laid plans OF mice and me...
Nathan,
Pizza was available in Cuba in the 40's and 50's. A lot of the ships that came into the port of Havana were Italian. That's probably where we learned to make the pizza.
In Varadero, there was a place that particularly made great pizza - of course, it was this type of Cubanized version. My mom can't recall the name of it, but she assured me I got the taste right.
Try putting picadillo or chorizo on it just to mix it up while still keeping the distinctive Cuban flavor.
Me? I'm thinking that next time I'll maybe add some plantains...
This Cuban pizza thing could really get out of control. =D

Husband: "This is really good. What kind of pizza is it?” I make homemade pizza all the time, so that part doesn't surprise him. It's the distinctly Cuban flavor that gives him pause.... Me: “It’s a Cuban pizza, of course.” Husband: “Who are you trying to kid?? There’s no such thing as a Cub...
George,
Yes. Torture. That was my master plan.
This wouldn't be the first time I've been called "evil." =D

mario,
I found that every ingredient in this recipe is vital for that "authentic Cuban" flavor. Especially the gouda cheese.
Buen Provecho!

George,
Trust me. It is SOOO good.
Yes, Miami has all things Cuban, including pizza. I didn't get to try it while I was there. This one is "de oido" - in other words, I made it up. =D
I could open a store and call it O.C.C.P. (Orange County Cuban Pizza) I crack myself up.

Ody,
You obviously know that learning happens wherever we are.
jana,
Lunch sounds good. And yes, my treat!
Mailyn,
I'm so proud of you for starting to blog in the first place. I think by the time Nicolas gets to be school age, you'll be ready to homeschool.
"What did you learn in school today, kids?"
I know some people still think that homeschooling is a little unconventional. But today, our first day of the school year, was an absolutely normal school day for us. Here are the subjects we covered: Statistics: Probability: Sociology: Color Theory: Critical Thinking: (And thank...
Susan,
I LOVE that story. What a perfect song to remember JM's first breath. wow.
Rock and Roll Babies and Uber-Dork Parents
Last night Eric and I went to a concert at nearby Verizon Wireless Amphitheater (which, after experiencing the marathon-length hike in and out of said amphitheater accompanied by hundreds of sloppy-drunken revelers, made us come to the cataclysmic decision that we would probably never go there f...
Billy,
Trust me. We're already creeping steadily towards Eyesore of the Neighborhood status here. Relieve the Olympic games are over! (phew!)
Besos,
Marta
It might have been easier to get cable...
I've mentioned before that we have chosen not to subscribe to cable tv in our area. And in our fair valley, that means No TV At All For The Darbys. It's a lifestyle choice we've made and we're okay with it, most of the time. But... Eric really, really, REALLY wanted to watch the Olympics......
mario,
Glad you were touched. Makes this whole blogging thing worthwhile. Besos!
George,
I know. Fun to say, huh? I am guessing zun-zun is just another Cubanism. This is one of those things that I just grew up with and was never formally "taught," so the truth is that I don't exactly know. Señor Google (or Cuco, as my mom would say) wasn't much more knowledgeable about Cuban hummingbirds. =D
Give it a rest.
I was standing at my kitchen sink thinking of the myriad of tasks still unfinished on my to-do list. These included a bunch of planting and pruning tasks in my garden, not to mention the mess I have going on in my office/studio/classroom right now. The voice of my Noisy Internal Perfectionist ...
Thanks, Gener!
You are a golden god. (with little g, of course. =D)
My blog has been saying a lot of stuff behind my back...
From wordle.net comes a "blog word generator." Apparently this is what my blog has been saying this week: Who knew? ;-) Go here to make your own. H/T Pam and Geno
Kelley,
"Officiant" makes him sound so much taller. =D
Following the leader
My mom (back in the day) used to babysit her grandchildren. As long as I can remember, there were always assorted nieces and nephews underfoot. But these three.... Michael, John-Paul and Nicole. The three of them gave her a total run for her money. And Michael, as I recall, had the advantag...
Ody,
There is a way to do a "screen capture" which completely eludes me on this supersonic Mac. So I just printed it and scanned it - I know. How pedestrian!

Michael-
First...That's called selective amnesia.
Second... Jennifer and Isaac are indeed perfect and John and Nicole. You couldn't have planned it better. ;-)
Third... You can't help but be bossy. It's in our blood. =D
