MASHABLE - Oct 2 - From the Budnitz Bicycles shop to Kidrobot designer toys, Paul Budnitz has been blessed and cursed with the compulsion to keep starting new projects. He describes the urge to create a new social network as a long time coming. He couldn't find the right bike for himself, so he built one. He couldn't find the right social network, so he built that too. Budnitz is also more than willing to admit that both of these companies, like most of his business ideas, seem unbelievably stupid early on. by Seth Fiegerman See full article at Mashable Continue reading

STREET FIGHT MAG - Jan 16 - In a new report “The Future of Legacy Media”, research and consulting firm Borrell Associates has both good and bad news for old media (newspapers, TV, radio, magazines). Q: What would it take for old media to maintain their current dominance in local ad revenue? A: They should view their digital initiatives as new ventures instead of product extensions. Q: Could the newspaper industry ever have conceived of Craigslist? Free classifieds? A: This year, Craigslist will make ~$200M on what we suspect might be an 80% profit margin. So, the “surprise winners” will be legacy media companies whose owners are brave enough to incubate their own disrupters outside of the existing management circle. Q: How seriously will Twitter and FB disrupt ad spending shares in the local space? A: They’ll disrupt it, but they haven’t aggregated a particularly valuable audience. by Tom Grubisich See full article at Street Fight Mag See all posts on Craigslist Continue reading

SNW - Dec 7 - Ray Kurzweil is Mr Future. He's been an incredible innovator, and author of some master works on future technology. This week I'm attending Singularity University at NASA, which was founded by Ray Kurzweil and Peter Diamandis and is taught by a who's who of future technologists. At some point in the future we'll create an intelligence greater than our own. That's 'the singularity.' That AI will go on to create an even greater AI...etc. Then, great things happen, or otherwise. I'll be soaking up the SU lectures and putting some thought into what the extreme future of Internet dating and social networking could and should be and will run these thoughts on SNW in February.
