The whole time I was studying English as an undergraduate, I thought the Western canon was filled with dead white men and that all too often the voices and theoretical perspectives of women and people of color were excluded. I never expected to encounter another discipline in the humanities that makes me realize that English literature is actually sitting on the cutting edge of diversity.
