Luckily for me my wife hasn't been deployed...yet. If she came along a camel she would probably want to send it home to keep the dogs company...

Bob, we're going to be in Iraq for a VERY long time training the INA and IP (and thumbing our noses at the Iranians). Remember, the phrase was "combat troops." If shot at, they will defend themselves.

It's a shame that the military still does not get it - your best officers are leaders, not managers. Many of the best leaders are driven out to lead in the private sector, leaving the few that are left fighting with malingerer conformists. KABOOM! was a great book, btw. I passed it onto my wife, who may be deploying to Iraq in 2012 (if not sooner).

Well said, 1st Sgt. As someone who served in peacetime, I will always be on "the outside" with combat vets. Although my wife hasn't deployed, her mindset is much like those who have because she's working with them (and training for it) day after day. We need to keep things in perspective.

With my limited understanding of that part of the world, one thing I have noticed is that there is no collective "we," only "me" or "tribe." I don't even know if they can comprehend "for the greater good."

1st Sgt, you gotta do what you gotta do. It takes a special spouse to support the servicemember, especially now. Now that my wife is active duty in the guard, I'm finding myself on the other side supporting her and helping her get ready for drill and schools.

Gotta love military life! When I was a young Marine, the first thing I was told once I got on station was our motto was 'Sepmer Gumby' - always flexible as the situation, even in garrison duty, was constantly changing. Although your family may not appreciate having you ripped from them for a couple of months, I know you are probably relieved to see your troops one more time and see them off.

Dang it, 1st Sgt, I'm sitting in a public place with tears running down my cheeks. Cpl Wrightsman is a true Marine and lived up to the honor of the Corps. To keep tragedies like this from happening again 1st Sgt, please make sure your Marines can at least tread water. Good Marines like Cpl Wrightsman are worth keeping around, and alive.

My wife is active duty in the National Guard, and on Thursdays the vets she works with that have deployed to Afghanistan jokingly hold hands. The first time she saw it, she thought they were making fun of her since she's relatively new there. They had to explain to her what Man Love Thursdays were. When she told me, I thought it was a joke. She had to explain to me the Afghan Islamic intreptation of the Koran. It seems like the rest of the Islamic world are doing the Afghans no favors.

Welcome home! You will feel different for a while, kind of out of place. You said it: time pretty much stood still there for you. Everyone you left is the same, is doing the same things. You went off for a year and saw and did things that no one you left can fathom. It'll take some time to get back into the groove of being a civilian. Good luck!

Johnny, where are the WMDs now? We've looked for 9 years. Could it be that Saddam was telling the truth and they were destroyed? Nah. Saddam wouldn't tell the truth. Just like Saddam wanted nothing to do with Al Qaeda...

Sorry folks, GeraldT is pretty much right on the money. Change? Who was the one who sent us into Iraq and got over 4000 AMERICAN service members killed and thousands more injured for no reason? The same bunch of coward chicken hawks who are now saying get us out of Afghanistan. As to the article, adding BAH to the GI Bill is brilliant. The less stress one has at school allows them to do better in their courses. Economic times stink right now, home values have shrunk. Rents are going up in many areas because people have walked away from their mortgages and are renting again. It appears the DOD is basing BAH on ownership rather than renting. As with kourtney, I served when the GI Bill was gutted. The $300 a month stipend does not cover much. It seems like the more money the VA and DOD throws at things, the more people feel entitled for more.

The same thing happened to my wife - no direction and then the joins the Guard (she's too old for the Marines). I found it humbling while in Korea for Team Spirit, to have old people come up to me and thank me for my service and being there in their country. Hopefully that will happen in Afghanistan someday.

One of my Senators is looking into the transient housing situation at Bagram. Maybe that will kick the Air Force into gear and give you better pizza options as well.

I don't know if it will help you get beef for your pizza, but I contacted my state representatives about the housing issue. This is beyond ridiculous. Prisoners at Gitmo are being housed better. I've spent my fair share of time in transient quarters, but I would not wish this on anyone. I have another motive as well - my wife is in the National Guard and will end up in Afghanistan sometime. I know she will end up in some hellhole, but it has to be better than that.
