Sounds like a great movie, Emma. What I also find irritating nowadays is film trailers that give the whole plot away. A couple of films that I wanted to see I didn' t bother going after seeing the trailer. I love 'Better Call Saul' on Netflix for this kind of understated psychological reveal you describe. A lot of it is done through unusual camera angles which illustrate broken American dreams on deserted retail parks, reflecting Saul's desperation. Unlike a lot of American series BCS credits the viewer with a lot of intelligence!

Any advice for people in the Netherlands, where there aren't any hills? ;) Actually some of my best ideas come to me on my bike, something about being totally absorbed in the activity frees up my mind. I've got a pile of YA books to read trying to figure out what all the fuss is about so after reading you blog I feel supported in my decision. So glad I discovered you in 2015 and all the very best for 2016!

Useful tips, Emma. This will be my sixth Nano and this year I plan to plan more! Save the Cat by Blake Snyder has also been recommended to me to help with the narrative arc, and I want to use all the useful stuff I used at York too.

Learning about psychic distance was a real eye-opener for me. I'd read about free indirect style earlier this year on a Future Learn course about literature in English country houses so the penny has now finally dropped! It was such an inspiring weekend but I feel a little bewitched and boggled about how to proceed from here. I am going to take your advice and just be cool and not rush myself into making any decisions right this minute. Off now to do some zumba dancing which always clears my head. Thanks for all the pertinent and well-explained writing tips on this blog :)
