Because daddy’s home!!! It is odd to think how much one can miss someone when their physical absence is a mere 38 hours. But sure enough, I was so excited to get home from work last night I practically ran home. Desmond had spent the night at grandma Jacci’s house in Aptos with his mama. And though it was only one night the absence of his wiggly, giggly smiling presence was never felt more by me. It sounds sickeningly maudlin but his presence is so important, even at this early stage, that I miss him even when I am at work for the day. I don’t know if this is common among fathers (I say “fathers” because I presume the mother/child bond to be more instinctually tight). Or does this have to do with the age at which we had him; older more stable, less concerned about going out/socializing, etc. Most of you know through my repeated “comments” and “status updates” how much in love with our child I am, but even when I think/write/talk about it I am amazed. I am so intertwined in this love that I don’t think I could ever understand how a parent could be abusive (factually speaking, I could understand, but I couldn’t really understand). And by no means am I proselytizing that everyone should have children. I am completely supportive of those who choose not to because I trust that they know best their own situations and needs. The world would not need anymore unwanted children or unhappy parents. I can only explain this feeling by saying that I am happier than I have ever been. And the great thing is that the happiness grows every day. And the love I have for this child has only strengthened the love that Heidi and I have for one-another. It has presented us with new challenges but it us also strengthened our resolve and increased our patience. So now you know why I am smiling. It’s because I get to go home to this. Continue reading
