Integration is no longer the priority. When the district itself is 60-70% Latino, why make Magnet programs even more exclusive to white students... The paradox is that MALDEF would have to support demagnetizing Davis because of the definition they agreed on, but notice that not even the TW article asks whether they support their own definition. To be blunt would expose they side with the Special Master over the community, but he media seems to not ask them directly.

Huppenthal already gave the green light and CRC is already being offered. However neither the Special Master nor MALDEF will advocate for an MAS return since that now conflicts with their work on CRC.

I hear that MALDEF is no longer interested in MAS and are going all in on the CRC/Romero compromise with Huppenthal. The only person on the Latino's side is not MALDEF, but the DOJ.

Word is that a reason HT was chosen was because other candidates were disqualified by Mark Stegeman who may have illegally contacted their schools to do his own private investigation on them...

And here I believed HT that God brought him here... Seems like in three years God will have him leave for the bigger paycheck

Auggie Romero will be the next TUSD Superintendent

Rumors coming out from TUSD are that the budget hole may be up to $19 million now... heard anything about this?

The Civil Rights Act is holding us back also... just as Rand Paul! Heck, so are anti-slavery laws! Just think about what slavery would do for labor costs and how it could be a real needed boost to our economy! Why are we letting anti-racism hold us back from the greatness of the antebellum South?

For a moment I thought this article was about Ann Kirkpatrick, who does not debate and also runs from her constituents

SB1070 is one of those interesting cases where you can turn it into an anti-ALEC, anti-Private Prisons argument. But what about Mark Stegeman's votes and action on HB2281 and to kill MAS... what video do you have to prove you are on the right side of history and not on the Horne-Huppenthal-Hunnicutt side... BTW... asking what Loretta Hunnicutt thinks of me is like caring what Gabby Mercer thinks of you... who the hell cares about that TEAbagger? Apparently you do.

The question is not completely hypothetical. This was only Sugiyama's second board meeting, the first being a short meeting to swear him in and vote for a new board president, but certainly it was his first Regular board meeting for January 2012. So then, placed in front of the $15 million cliff I would take the Matrix approach... the spoon is not really there to begin with. Vote NO on the Hicks resolution, and then Judge Bury could intervene, just as he had TWICE this summer... the state has no power over a federal deseg case, and MAS is in the federal court approved Post-Unitary Plan... it doesn't matter what the data says or what people think, it's right there in the court order! But it does help that the Cambium Audit showed no law being broken by MAS. So thus the $15 million cliff never existed to begin with. What is quite disturbing, as I'm sure you have noticed, is Pam's use of "true believer" to describe MAS supporters... this of course is the book that Stegeman quoted from, The True Believer, while he was in court testifying that MAS was a cult. I'm glad that Blog4AZ is still halfway decent now that you brought a non-progressive on board. Keep up the good work Mr. Safier!

Some believe that downtown is cursed for what Tucson did to the Mexican American barrio decades ago... the homes of the people that built Tucson and lived here, not in the suburbs looking for a downtown profit.

The board of directors for Richey will be the TUSD board. It's not so much that Richey is now a charter school, it's that it is a charter school RUN BY TUSD...

How and why does AP European History satisfy American History requirements? Surely they cover less of American History than the American History / Mexican American perspective class does? And when will Stegeman apply his academic powers to go after the programs that do fail minorities, such as ELL?

It's because of the money we are in this situation. Jan 3rd TUSD was found in violation. This kicked off a 60 day period to March 4th. Judge Roll was assassinated, and he was the one assigned to the Tucson 11 case, so 45 more days were added. That is up April 18! So this board meeting tonight was to be the last one... but I have heard that another extension was given. The main reason I understand is because April 18th is still in the semester, so what do you do with the 2,000 students in the ES courses? Better to wait until summer... ... and also so there are less kids to protest and have walkouts. So the money issue (10% across the board penalty) is STILL ON THE TABLE after two extensions... If it WASN'T about money but about justice, then TUSD would say "just try to withhold 10% of our budget... we will sue you!" Instead we have all this money being spend on audits and what not... HB2281 will be thrown out just like parts of SB1070 are. TUSD will win. If the Dems were smart they would rally behind this issue because it will be a victory in a red state. And it is simple too. Whenever CNN covers this issue they seem to be sympathetic to TUSD and let Tom Horne sound ridiculous on his own... There is so much more wrong with the district... ELL classes are a major one... the firing of teachers, which Mark Stegeman voted for. But Stegeman has a history of this, and I argue with other of his friends over this, but look at his record. He was the sole vote against the Post-Unitary Plan because in his words it expanded MAS classes... this was before HB2281. He also voted to get rid of Sean Arce, one of the founders of the program, as the director of the program. This is a racist attack on innocent children, and what is more evil, IMHO, are Democrats who justify it in the name of economics and numbers... this is about justice! Even Dr. Cornell West said that Tucson is the epicenter of the new civil rights battle... and that's a reference to Ethnic Studies... the Dems should be 100% on the side of civil rights, not compromising in ANY way... this is historic, and Mark Stegeman is playing games with us... Yeah... get rid of MAS so that the AZ Dept of Ed can change all the textbooks to have more MAS stuff in it... you know who appoints the ADE? Huppenthal and Brewer! Mark Stegeman must think we are dumb... NO COMPROMISE!
This is a ridiculous compromise for Ethnic Studies teachers to make. Have your classes not available for credit anymore, but we MIGHT put some of the material in the other classes? How about you do that FIRST, then we can talk. Keep in mind that you would have to incorporate some of the material and books that Tom Horne hates, and they could just ban those classes also. Also, you would have to have a huge revolution in American History classes. You would have to get publishers to incorporate more MAS material into the books. How is easy this, how long would it take, and what steps has Mark Stegeman taken in this direction so far? I only speak for myself, but you'll excuse the Tucson 11 for not trusting Tom Horne, John Huppenthal, and Mark Stegeman for promising to put more MAS into American history classes... first of all Huppenthal promised to Stop La Raza, Tom Horne says that not even as an elective are these courses allowed and Stegeman is trying to compromise with this racist attack. How about this? If you are really interested in something that affects minorities and segregates them, how about Stegeman focus on ELL courses, which Tom Horne mandated that students be segregated from other students for 4 hours a day, leaving only about an hour or two to learn everything else, math, science, history, etc. THOSE classes segregate, THOSE classes hurt minorities by hindering their progress towards graduation... ... oh but wait, it's not really about helping minorities or "segregating" them. This is about a right-wing racist attack, and shame on Mark Stegeman for giving in even a little on this racist attack. Even the Pima Dems said no compromise, but it seems when it comes to money, Mark Stegeman is quick to compromise his values...

There is something fundamentally wrong about firing a good teacher also, who may not get their job back. Imagine all the stress, anxiety, and fear these teachers and their families are going through right now. Will I be able to pay the mortgage, what about my son's braces? That worrying spreads throughout the family, everyone worried, and that spreads, and that spreads... A good teacher should never be fired, period.
