In the genres, the literature is not segregated here in the states, but for literary fiction it often is. And some writers seem to be placed in the African American sections, even if it is genre writing, say if it's a romance but deals with African American characters. I With regard to genre writing, I guess he section places has to do with where the publisher thinks the book might best sell. As for literary fiction, I don't know. I have more trouble understanding that.

Hi, I'm working really hard to make my new home all comfy cozy, so you can come over for coffee or cosmos and some great book chat. I've posted a new article over there entitled Dead Tree Books. I'm still wet behind the ears as far as Wordpress is concerned,... Continue reading

I'm in the process of test driving a Wordpress blog. I don't know if I'm going to like it enough to fully commit. My blogs have always been with Typepad and learning Wordpress is like learning a new language. Yikes. Trying to work with it actually kept me up past... Continue reading

I am really enjoying the whole book blog thing. It's getting me back into reading, which was always something that brought me a lot of satisfaction. So glad the boys are enjoying 2nd grade. My fingers are crossed that A likes his teacher! Have a good weekend (I'll probably touch base with you on Goodreads or FB!). XOXO

Interestingly, we visit Ireland a lot and find that the literature there seems to be less segregated. I found that to be surprising. I'm continuing to research it and have found that even the writers themselves seem perplexed. I'll share more on that.

I don't have long to spend writing this post this morning, so I will have to be brief. My older son is already awake at 6:48 a.m., asking me questions, and ready to begin the day. It's a good thing I already showered and mopped the kitchen, living room, and... Continue reading

I am finding some really interesting reading on this topic. I'm going to be sharing a lot more. Stay tuned. I'm not sure what the bookseller rationale is. We make up such a small percentage of their profits, it would be surprising if they were catering to minority groups. So, I'm left thinking there are other reasons. And yes, it does marginalize literature that winds up in other sections in the minds of many. It's a real problem too when it comes to getting other people to read your books. There is no serendipity for people who are not specially looking for a book that has been placed in one of those sections. There are good books with gay characters or black characters or Asian characters in them, but you don't just hap upon them like you would if they were with the general literature.
