The Washington Post of Sunday, July 24th, had an article promoting NASA's manned spacefiight missions. The new big program will send a crew to land on a asteroid 'way out beyond Mars by the year 2025. It would take six months to get there, and a variety of new vehicles would be required. Of course there would be no atmosphere, but no gravity either. A big problem would simply staying on the surface. Why do this? NASA says the reason is to save civilization in case Earth when...eventually...there will be a big asteroid threatening to extinct us. When that threat... Continue reading

It occurs to me that the deepwater oil spill (which is not really a spill) is still mysterious as to its cause. The President has castigated all others concerned for "finger pointing", but that fits in with the notion that no one involved really knows how it happened. A half-dozen highly professional organizations had roles in this drilling process, and I doubt any of them are guilty of malpractice. Obviously something went wrong, but it was not because these people did anything reprehensible. One possibility I have not heard mentioned is sabotage....or terrorism! We have seen images from submeribles at... Continue reading

A lot of New Yorkers "dodged the bullet" when that poorly constructed car bomb failed to explode. I have heard a lot of praise for the job our homeland security people did in identifying and apprehending the perp, but all that pivoted on the fact that the bomb didn't work. It if had functioned as intended, I doubt we would yet have a clue as to who did it, much less captured anyone. The vehicle would have been obliterated. No cellphone to tinker with. VIN number of the vehicle would be possible if they found the engine, but that didn't... Continue reading

GLOBAL ELECTRICITY What would we do if in the near future electricity became almost limitless in supply, and also very inexpensive. Assume maybe one third as expensive as it is now. Your could use all you want. No pollution from generation. Reliable. Well distributed because dependence on the national grid is diminished….power comes from mini-generation stations all over the place. It’s cheap because: it doesn’t have to be sent over long distances; the generation equipment cost is greatly reduced because of large scale production; and operating costs are minimal because power plants do not require much attention. For starts, your... Continue reading
