Five Things Parents of 2e Kids Want Teachers to Know
I am always seeing columns from or about teachers, advising us parents on how to get along with them and make their jobs easier. That's fine as far as it goes, but as the parent of two 2e kids (that's... Continue reading

If the South Did Not Exist, We Would Have to Invent It. And the Rednecks Would Still Make Money
People have been saying for 50 years that the South isn't the South anymore, but here's proof that they are wrong. First, I bring you Honey Boo Boo, the star of the TLC reality show. You can watch the show... Continue reading

Beagle Guilt
There is something about the beagle countenance that lends itself to looks of reproach, and these days I am getting the full treatment. The reason: I have run out of Max's home-made dog food and am relying for the moment... Continue reading

There is no Raining in Baseball!
So the hubster and I are at the Nats game, and things are not going so well for the Washington Nationals--they are behind something like 6-3 to the Miami Marlins, of all people, and right at the top of the... Continue reading

One More Reason Clinton's So Good: He's a Southern Boy
There are a lot of reasons why Bill Clinton's speech last night at the DNC was so awesome, but the unwritten subtext of his delivery can be summed up in one word: Southernness. It was there in his folksy delivery,... Continue reading

On Second Thought, I'm Gonna Eat Mor Chiken
Am I ever gonna taste one of those golden fried chicken fillet sandwiches again? And milkshakes. Chick Fil A makes the best milkshakes. (Not that I need milkshakes, which I don't, or speak from personal experience. I just read this... Continue reading

Mutual Assured Destruction
Love has something to do with the definition of "family"--but the real sticking point, the place where things get bolted together, is the knowledge that everybody else has the goods on you, and you have the goods on them. Mutual... Continue reading

Listening To The Morons
It's a mark of how mindlessly polarized political discourse in this country has become that quite a while back, one of my kids asked from the back seat, "Mom, what is a liberal?"--and my mind went blank. My first response: "Well, it's not a dirty word, whatever you may have heard." But then I wa...
See, now you're talking about politicians. I'm just talking about people
with political views. A great deal of the reason politicians say the
stuff they say is the need to pander to ordinary folks who have views

the other side. Change starts from the bottom up. Besides, who elected
those evil folks? We did.

Following in Mommy's Footsteps
So the other day I get a phone call from Suzanne's principal, who sounds very, very serious, and she says I need to come to talk to her ASAP because of a serious disciplinary problem with my third-grade daughter. My thoughts immediately go to garish and horrible possibilities: she decided to sho...
