There are days when I look in the mirror and Im not quite sure who is staring back at me. Part of the reason for this is that Ive effectively had two livestwo dreams that have driven my every action, and focused my life. The first big dream was to graduate college with a Bachelors in Mass Communications. I knew it wouldnt be easythere were days when it seemed that the textbooks had swallowed my entire life. Yet I stayed focused on that dream the way a wayward sailor stays focused on the stars. After I graduated, however, I realized that, once again, I didnt recognize that face in the mirror. The face staring back at me was a teachers face, and I needed to become that girl staring back at me. As such, I began teaching students English, even though education was not my first passion. Ive found myself channeling my previous teachers their passion was often enough to make the most difficult lessons exciting, vivid, and new. With them as my inspiration, Ive attempted to establish a bond with my studentsthey realize I am their teacher, but they know Ill do everything in my power to help them achieve their goals. Like me, theyre dreamers, on a journey to become that better version of themselves theyve glimpsed in the mirror I simply let them know they never have to dream alone. Thats why I wish to pursue a Masters of TESOL in America. With it, Ill have an opportunity to touch more students lives, and have a chance to follow my own star across the ocean to the United States. In a way, I consider myself to by a child of two worlds, and being able to teach students English as an alternative language means I can help others do the same thingto extend a hand across classrooms, cities, and oceans, inviting students to discover worlds theyve never known beforeto live the lives theyve only known when their eyes were closed. I hope that my experience of living in two worlds will give me a chance to positively affect both the university I attend, the city I live inand, of course, myself. Im hoping to unite the best of America and the best of Singapore into something brand new. This, I feel, is the heart of education synthesis. When two worlds come together, and something wonderful and new emerges from the union. I hope to offer the world around me a glimpse of Singaporethe hopes, dreams, and values of my home. In turn, I will get a glimpse of America first-handin teaching the language and studying American literature, Ive always been fascinated by the culture within it. This is my chance to insert myself into those pagesto become part of Americas story by embedding myself within the American dream. In the end, communities, cities, and entire nations are the same as people seeing in dreams a mirror image of a better future. When you try to change the world, it changes you. However, I like to think when the world changes someone, the world itself changesthe dreamer can touch the dream itself. In a way, I hope that I dont recognize that face in the mirror ever againthat I am always striving, working, and dreaming to become a better person, and that I can help others do the same. Its not enough to dream of a better tomorrowwe must all become a better tomorrow.
