This is one of the best articles I've ever read on seminary education, full stop. Harvey has internalized "the problem with privilege" and produced, if not a full solution, an important look into the path less travelled by the seminary pedagogue. Andrea Smith wrote "The Problem with Privilege," I'd encourage any seminary instructor to read it and create your own contextualized solution to the problem of centering whiteness while try to deconstruct and dismantle white supremacy:

The Conversation We Must Get Tired Of
Jennifer Harvey Associate Professor Drake University In some ways it’s really simple. If we had genuinely multi-racial classrooms in the U.S. the challenge of race in those same rooms would be much less of one. We so quickly find ourselves embroiled in an oh-so-familiar conversation when the pe...
I feel like my learning community has been groping around trying to get to redefinition, but we're not there. Where do we go from here? What is redefinition for you?

This is really great. I appreciated the "we breathe in racism" most.

Thanks for the suggestions. Students can also advocate that when considering new professors thought and merit given to those of different social and racial locations. At George Fox Seminary some students are working toward a culturally and racially competent library along with moving toward a more responsible curriculum for all seminary programs/classes across the board in lieu of the now en vogue "cultural competency class." The Ivory Tower of Babel will fall.
The Elephant has Constructed the Room. Teaching Racism as a Biblical Scholar
Rev. Dr. Mitzi J. Smith Associate Professor of New Testament & Early Christian Studies Ashland Theological Seminary/Detroit Center One day in 2009 after President Obama took office, I walked into my Greek exegesis class at Ashland Theological Seminary in Detroit and one of two white male studen...
