As a kid I always got to choose what I wanted for my birthday meal, and exactly what kind of birthday cake I'd have and how it was decorated. I kept the tradition for my son and stepson. My stepson now keeps the tradition with his daughter,

Lots of variables here! Hubby and I have a music-based business that we run from home. If nothing is going on, it's life as usual, and I knit appx 10-12 hours or so a week. If we are on a concert tour (as I will be over New Years) I'll knit six hours or so on rehearsal day, and then five hours or so at each concert. That's about 40-some hours plus the odd hour or two for the average tour. Concerts are like a 'Stitch and Bitch', since most of the ladies in the orchestra are knitters, too. We compare projects and talk knitting.

I've never tried a cashmere/silk blend. It sounds heavenly! I usually use wool or wool/nylon.

I learned by watching my mother knit when I was six or seven years old. I didn't do anything beyond a scarf to get a Girl Scout merit badge. When I was in my teens I found a book on lace making and took up knitted lace. I didn't do any serious knitting until I had my son, then I made sweaters and mittens. I rediscovered knitting last year, taught myself how to work on two circs and work with magic loop. Socks are my favorite thing to knit- I can take them anywhere, just tuck my knitting in bag and go! It's a life-long thing, knitting. While I made mittens for my son and stepson while they were kids, my granddaughter begs for socks. She lives in New Mexico and I live in NY. I can't wait for my next trip to visit her, so I can teach her to knit. =)

That yarn is gorgeous. I once crocheted a 'granny square' shawl. It's not very warm. I should really get knitting once my holiday projects are finished. (six down - one to go!)

I received an early Christmas gift from a friend this year. Our family's been going through a hard time with our son's chronic pain, and my friend, Jeff, thought I needed a lift. In a used bookstore, Jeff found a book that had once belonged to my beloved late uncle. The library seal with my uncle's name and the name of his partner is embossed on the flyleaf. It must have been a bit of Christmas magic that he found that book. My Uncle Harry has been dead for nearly fifteen years, and his residence was in Philadelphia. Jeff lives in Ohio. I am just amazed by this gift and am still utterly speechless when I pick the book up and look at the seal.

Since the business my Hubby and I run is music-based, we're running non-stop until after the New Year. For the past few years I've been sending e-cards, but since everyone's so afraid of getting a worm on their computer, I'm Photo Shop-ing a card for our friends this year.

Hubby and son are not the adventurous sort and are pretty conservative. I go the 2x2 route, like you. BUT! My stepson loves two-colored socks from the old Minerva Yarn pattern http://tinyurl.com/yev685h I knit the sock body in a color he can wear to work (he teaches EMT students) with the toe and heel in something bright or outrageous.

I've never made a knitted ornament, but I think I will knit myself some jazzy red socks with some jingle bells on them if I have enough time. =)

Peanut Butter Blossoms http://tinyurl.com/2e9vef , are the family favorite. I never made them till I married, and got a stepson along with the ring. Dave was 11 when we tied the knot, and I had to find a way to let him know I wanted to be a part of his life. So I called his mother and asked for Dave's favorite cookie recipes. This let Dave know I liked him, and let The Ex know I wouldn't be a pain in the ass where her son was concerned. And yes, we all did live happily ever after!

Until we got our Border Collie-mix we had a big tree every year. Unfortunately, Pepper is a very active, super busy dog, so we have a table-top, fiber optic type tree instead. That way, we have a cute, cheesy Christmas Tree, and Pepper can't rearrange the decorations.

The house was filled with music at Christmas. My mother had an open invitation to dinner for any of my uncle's musician friends who were alone or away from their families and performing in Philadelphia on Christmas. Musicians would show up for Sunday Dinners during the year too, but Christmas was more festive. Some years there'd be singers, other years, instrumentalists but everyone sang (or played) for their supper. Along with the tradition of music, there was a rule of no electricity for illuimination. Every room, except the kitchen, and bathroom, (Mom had her limits on my Dad's celebration ideas) was lit by candle light at nightfall. Even the bulbs in the dining room chandelier were replace by candles inside hurricane-type covers. No matter where I've lived, I always carry the memories of the magical childhood Christmases.
