The man stands alone. His 3000th hit is at Yankee Stadium, a long at-bat going to a 3-2 count, a home run. The first Yankee ever to hit 3000. Only the second ever to homer his 3000th, the first was the incomparable Wade Boggs. Last game he was three away... Continue reading

Just ordered a couple of books suggestive of my Paris priorities! Lebovitz has put a book out, and wonderful Clotilde of Chocolate & Zucchini has put out a Paris foodie book as well as her cookbook. Thank you Clotilde! Continue reading

This doesn't happen every day -- an envelope in the mail with a key to a Paris apartment! Exciting! Thank you Grant! Will have fun being the first arrival. Found a terrific blog to help us make the most of our time there: David Lebovitz, currently describing Bleu de Gex... Continue reading

Bravo NY Times for their long overdue paywall. I've been waiting for them to give me a way to pay for their excellent product that doesn't involve transferring trees from Canadian forests to my driveway. Happy to do my bit to support journalism by paying a fair (take note, New... Continue reading

Just saw a reference to MacGyver which reminded me, I was told on the plane the other day that I look like him. No idea who he is other than a TV guy but googled him and by gosh, she was right, I'm a dead ringer. Or he is. And... Continue reading

News just in, Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, on the first ballot! Lively times ahead in Chicago. I'm heading straight to twitter for the latest from the hilarious fake Rahm who's been tweeting as him since he threw in his hat for mayor. The real one has offered a several... Continue reading

Funny thing about blogging, as soon as you post about something , up it pops somewhere. No mystery on the common progeny of this one; Mark Bittman is living in the same New York icebox I am. It's oatmeal week, it's the winter of oatmeal. A good post from him... Continue reading

Wowsa. We all love NPR and right now they're streaming the entirety of Lucinda Williams' soon to be released double album, Blessed. Sounds like the best thing she's done since the best thing anyone's done, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. In my book she's the second greatest living songwriter... Continue reading

Still with the fire. If we've swapped climates I hope the Frozen North is making the most of it by popping crocuses about now! This weather is getting old, already is old. And yet. The fire does look and smell wonderful. Enjoying it, in season. Continue reading

Something of a political movie for presidents day but nothing to do with any president. The Young Victoria. What a magnificent, glorious movie. "Guard her well and keep her safe from harm." How ignorant it made me feel. She survived an assassination attempt with Prince Albert injured in protecting her?... Continue reading

Was reminded the other night while watching "Eat Pray Love" of a big Naples highlight last month. Truth in advertising: we went to a place, Da Michele, reputed to have the best pizza -- margherita of course -- anywhere. Completely true in my experience! I read somewhere that really great... Speaking of warming foods, I successfully experimented with porridge-by-the-week last week. Made a big slow-cooked batch of Scottish pinhead oatmeal with coconut milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup and boiled raisins. It did breakfasts all week, no less delicious at the end of the week than at the beginning. So this... Continue reading

Looking forward to Paris in June! Planning and anticipating being a big part of the fun, I've started mapping desirable places (ie restaurants) near the great apartment Grant lined up for us, based on recommendations in Le Fooding. Continue reading

Can it be true? Lard is healthier than butter? I'm perfectly happy to believe it. If I can find some around here I will try Delia's 50/50 butter/lard method in my next pie crust. With Whole Foods now in the neighborhood I can generally find pretty much anything (most recently,... Continue reading

Not George Will (emphatically not) and nothing to do with Egypt (but Bravo Egyptians!). A couple heroes of mine are in the news. Gary Snyder is the subject of a new documentary, I hope it shows up in Netflix or someplace accessible. Trailer here. And Wendell Berry (cf. this blog's... Continue reading

I've always liked George Will, he's erudite and entertaining in expressing views I generally disagree with, but on this he's bang-on! Listen to George Will! Rev the scientific engine! "America has been consuming its seed corn: From 1970 to 1995, federal support for research in the physical sciences, as a... Continue reading
