Thanks! Looking at pics of your past renovations gives me hope! You wouldn't believe the state our 1948 1.5 story in Minneapolis was in when we bought it last year from the original owners, now in their 90's! Nothing had been updated cosmetically since the late 1960s or cleaned/dusted since the late 1980s, judging by the literal inch of dust I found on most of the trim and light fixtures and the amount of sand and dirt found when we pulled up the carpets. Not quite the gut-job you did on the 1920s place but close! We will be doing that to the main bathroom at the end of the month. Thank you so much for sharing!

Also curious about the colors you used, it looks great! We also used Ikea ADEL kitchen cabinets and I really like them! I better, my fiance is a kitchen planner for Ikea! ;) We used Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan on the walls but I think we may have to go even lighter since the kitchen is a small one. -Rachel

Hey Benita, I was wondering if Wille had found a job yet. If not, he should try at hotel Rival. My fiance's cousin worked as a bartender there, he's in Oslo for a few months working now. He should try there, I think Benny Andersson owns the place :)

PS, if you dislike the idea of walking dogs, you can always train them to do this (I got such a kick out of their happy tails!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AKoLrQPdfQ

Wow, that's great Benita! Real Simple is as big as it gets here in the US for that niche. Congratulations! I will look for it when I finally get time to read my monthly issue!

I LOVE my Apple products! I have a macbook from 2007, and a macbook pro from 2010. I won't ever willingly go back to using a pc. I've had zero virus issues with both. I would advise to either get a good protective plastic shell for either the white macbook or the aluminum macbook pro. The only thing I could complain about is that some miniscule chips appeared around the edges of the white macbook since the casing is plastic, and there is a small dent on my aluminum macbook pro. Aluminum dents fairly easily and plastic becomes brittle over time. I'm probably meaner to my laptops than you are though ;). And there is the bootcamp thing so you can use your pc programs when you need to. As you upgrade or move onto other software, you can grandfather the mac stuff in. I had to use pc only software for an algebra class a while back and bootcamp was super easy to set up, even with help from the genius bar at the Apple store. You will love it, they are worth every penny!

*gasp! And you call yourself Swedish?!?! Just kidding, I actually drink more coffee than Peter does. I read somewhere that Sweden is in the top 5 nations for per capita coffee consumption. I need the kick in the pants as I am not a morning person!

Nice! I've been eyeballing the Breville BKC700XL Gourmet Single-Serve. I like that you can make iced coffee or tea with it. I got mostly cash for Christmas since most of my family members hate to shop, especially around the holidays, so I am thinking about using it on one of those. I have yet to hear anything bad about them. You're the second person in a week I've heard that got one and loves it. Enjoy your caffeine high! ;)

You don't have to buy the disposable k cups. Ekobrew, and several other manufacturers, make reusable ones. That way, you aren't constantly tossing the used k cups, and you can use whatever coffee you prefer, not just the brands that offer their coffee in k cups. You can order it from Amazon.com.

LOVE Gamla Stan! I'm with you on living there, but I have half a dozen places I think would be great to live in Sweden - My bestie lives in Vaxholm, lovely, Peter's morfar lives in Trosa, also nice, etc. It looks exactly the same as it did a year ago though. Is it -5C now like it was then? Most people leave Minnesota to get away from the freezing cold. Not me, I go to Sweden and freeze my baguettes off in the dark on vacation... lol

Ahlens was kind of a neat place. I went to the Ahlens City you recommended when I was in Stockholm last Christmas and bought Muji items. I love Marimekko's stuff, you can get it at Crate and Barrel stores here in the US. I quite recommend visiting the Ikea at Kungenskurva as well, it was very impressive and not all of it is exactly the same as in the US.

It is a balmy 68F degrees during the day here in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the temps are sinking into the 40s at night. We have a frost warning already for tomorrow night! The crazy thing is that just yesterday it was nearly 90F! Why do I live here again and not, say, Hawaii where it is 80F all year around???

Looks very nice! Your home is really coming together, bit by bit. I have an off-topic question. I was reading through some of your old posts from a while back (like 2009 I think) and there was one about scanning old slides. My parents have something like 20,000 slides that belonged to my mom's deceased uncle (he was a photographer) sitting in their basement that really should be scanned. Many of them are family photographs. What device did you use to scan them? I've been having a tough time knowing what scanner would do the job on those old ones because many times the pics were not taken with optimal light or there is some other issue with them. I know I will probably have to photoshop them but it would be helpful to know what kind of device to scan them with first. Thanks!

Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Well done! I find that here in the States people often throw things out that could be used for something else. After living in Europe, I cringe when I see stuff like that happen. You have some very functional storage space now at virtually no cost and the landfill is a little less full. Kudos to you!

Oh, nice work! I bet your mom was thrilled with the finished result. 82 is kind of old to be doing a project like that. She's lucky to have a daughter who cannot stand any amount of disorder ;)

In no particular order... 1. Hawaii. Spent two weeks on the island of Molokai for a service project when I was 15. It is everything you have heard and then some! Visited Honolulu as well; went to Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach. This was also the first time I saw an ocean. This is a big deal when you grew up smack in the middle of the North American continent! 2. Sharm El-Sheik. Went on a Red Sea scuba diving vacation there in 2004. Ras Mohammed national park is actually under water! I got to pet a wild sea turtle during a dive. If you ever get the chance, don't let fear hold you back! 3. Koln. Awesome Christmas market where I sampled the local variety of gluhwein. It is spiked with rum! 4. Munich. Great beer and bar food! 5. Rome. Impressive architecture, good weather, pinot noir, and fabulous cuisine! I found espresso-flavored yogurt in a supermarket there. Yum-o! 6. Crete. Sitting by the pool with a good book, olives, tzatziki, Turkish bread, and a nice cold Mythos.... 7. Paris. Crepes with apricot jam, fresh baguette, red wine, and croissants... 8. Iceland. The Blue Lagoon and vanilla skyr. 9. Vannern. Three day canoe trip, I managed to get sunburned in Sweden... 10. Stockholm. Sweden at Christmas, need I say more? I still need to get there at midsommar! Can't you tell I like to eat???

I LOVE Smeg refrigerators. I don't know if we even have them here in the US, I guess I've never bothered to look. The tivoli radio is super cute too. I have a kitchenaid mixer, not that model though. I use it more around the holidays for baking, I made a pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving last year. It was super handy for that! Hmmm, if money were no object... I would fly Benita here to Minneapolis and pay her to clean my apartment and organize my stuff! In May or June of course, not now when it is miserably cold. I'd get a Kronan bicycle too, I miss the one I had in Amsterdam. It was red with a front luggage carrier on it.
